My laptop shows a red shield with an "X" in the ntification area telling me my automatic update option is off. When ever I try to turn it on to recommended it eith doesn't register or give me an error. I've tried three different methods to turn and all fail. First was clicking on the balloon and click a button to turn it on, sometimes it does nothing other times it tells me to go to control panel - Automatic Updates and turn it off there. I did and it failed. I saw on microsoft's website that I had to go to:

    Run: services.msc
Clicked automatic updates, switch to enabled and clicked start.

    Then got an error message:

Could not start the Automatic Update services on Local Computer

Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabked devices associated with it.

I honestly don't know what to do and my school's network will not allow me internet access without the automatic update. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Random490. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :) Download and run Dial a fix from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4899.html. When you open it check the boxes that say Fix Windows Update. Once those options are selected then hit go and let dial a fix run. After that is done reboot the computer. Now see if you can turn on automatic updates.

Based on those errors from dial a fix it looks like some system files may have become corrupted and so thats why dial a fix cant register them. Do you have a Windows XP CD?

If you do then try this:

Click Start and click Run. Type the following command and press enter, sfc /scannow (there is a space between the c and the /). Let the process run. If it prompts you for your Windows XP CD then put it into the CD drive and press ok. After the process completes reboot the computer and again try enabling automatic updates. Also check in administrative tools< Services to make sure that the BITS service is set to automatic and the Windows Update service is set to automatic.

If you still can't turn automatic updates on then open up dial a fix again. Click the hammer button which will launch the advanced tools of dial a fix. Select the option that says reinstall BITS and hit Go. Let dial a fix run and report back if that worked.

If that suggesstion also fails to solve your problem then we might have to boot off the Windows XP CD and perform a few other steps.

No that did not work, The BITS is set to automatic, The sfc /scannow didn't even prompt me for the CD (It's the one for the re-installing the operating system right). And I still can't turn it on.

Something else I remember is before this became a problem for me I was getting more pop-ups and I think I recall one ad having the red shield with X on it, if that has anything to do with it.

Just to make sure that malware hasn't disabled automatic updates, download and run X Cleaner Micro Edition, http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe. No installation required. Just run and if it finds any malware it will prompt you to delete it. Also download and install Malware Bytes Anti Malware from here, http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php. Do a full scan with Malware Bytes and delete everything that is found. If it finds an infection you can post the Malware bytes log here if you wish.

    Hi,

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

After the system has been cleaned (or found to be clean) we can continue addressing the problem here.
