    Hi Mark

I've not abandoned you :) - just been away this past weekend.

Clearly simply copying autochk.exe into the system32 folder is not enough so I am thinking that the file may need to be registered with Windows.

Rather than lead you through a series of commands the simplest way is to download Register - Unregister This Dll - This program adds 2 options to the context menu when you right click on a DLL file. Register DLL, will try and register the selected DLL UnRegister DLL, will try and unregister the selected DLL.

    Give that a try.

If indeed CMD.EXE or COMMAND.EXE will not run from the Start-Run line I believe it indicates that the DOS side of the house is messed up.

Wait for ideas from others but I believe this can happen if either has been used and the DOS window not exited properly.

I just looked and CHKDSK seems to be different. It just takes Y/N. Typing EXIT does not seem to work. So Chkdsk may well be set up differently. It must put itself into and out of the DOS mode properly.

Pete did the downloads but i don't know how to use them. I don't know nothing about computers i just learned how to copy and paste last week but i know how to do a lot of other stuff i can find most tools.
Billy Bob you mite be right but run and command prompt do all the things i ask except chkdsk and chkntfs. This is a used computer i got it free from a relative ho paste away so i don't know it's history.
The blue screen has been their for ever it would flash by so quick it took a while to find out what it said and i didn't know the damage it could cause.

Forget Register - Unregister This dll - autochk.exe is not a dll and thus cannot be registered - my mistake :(

I have a question to all members? What kind of steps would have to be taken to install xp's sp1a again, on top of its self. Can this be done? Would all other updates after sp1a have to reinstalled also?

I'm thinking, if this can be done, without problems, autochk.exe, which I know is part of and replaced by xpsp1a would be done once again. Added advantage would be any other unnoticed missing system files or registry settings would also be refreshed/replaced.

Autochk.exe was revised again in SP2 - or so it would appear, my version .....

    5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158

IMO it would do no harm to install SP2 if it is not installed or to reinstall SP2 over an existing install of XP SP2. I have made an 'over the top' reinstall of SP2 in the past - I don't recall if it solved my problem, but it certainly did no harm. Whether or not it would resolve Mark's problem remains to be seen worth a try.

Of course if Mark does not have SP2 that might be a reason why my copy fails to work on his system.

Mark - IMO you are doing nothing wrong - the problem "is not a valid Win32 application" may occur if the download is corrupt or your Windows operating system is 'damaged; from past/present viral activity.

This statement of yours keeps on coming back to haunt me ....

In all honesty I think you are beating your head against the wall and you have two options - the preferred option, IMO is to give in gracefully, back up all your personal data to CD (assuming you have a cd burner installed) and boot from your Recovery disk and restore the computer to the state it was in when delivered.

The other option is do nothing, but I would strongly recommend the first option.

I just went thru this thread. One point that sticks out for me, the Dell CD. AFAIK, dell cd's are not "recovery" cd's, they are the full OS only, with added cd's for the installed apps that came with the system. Of course, this might have changed recently.

I just helped a relative with choosing a Dell system and I noticed there is a charge ($10 US) for the OS cd, otherwise there is a disk partition recovery system, which I didn't pay too much attention to.

    Regards - Charles

    Form an earlier reply

If indeed CMD.EXE or COMMAND.EXE will not run from the Start-Run line I believe it indicates that the DOS side of the house is messed up.

    with this

Before i got my anti spy wear i had over 400 infections and 2 Trojans.

I have to agree with PeteC You are wasting time With anything other than a complete new install.

I belive that there has been some serious damage to the complete system

Being asked to take someone shopping. Will check back later.

From my email - supposing you are using Outlook Express - click on the paperclip icon > Save attachments and save the file to your hard drive in, say, My Documents.

Navigate to My Documents and locate the file > right click on it > Copy.

Then navigate to C:\Windows\System 32 and right click on a blank area of the right hand Explorer window > paste.

Pete it worked no more blue screen!
I have not tried to run chkdsk or chkntfs but I have been able to run sfc /scannow so i am sure it will work.
By going on line I have learned allot but none of the basic things so treat me like a dummy. I am sorry to have put all of you through this.
Thanks every one for the help :)
    And thanks Pete :D
