When the subscription runs out in a couple of months (paid for) then I am doing things different. I like Malwarebytes free version, what do you think? NIS also came preinstalled, and i wanted to kind of get a grasp on things first.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a great application and highly recommended but you should also install Spyware Blaster, and enable the built in Windows Defender and Windows Firewall for a good combination of security software.

Would you like me to give you those links for those programs?

So spyware blaster works well with what is already installed in windows defender and firewall.
How cool is that? I am definitely going to make changes, i like to do them one at a time if possible in case anything goes screwy. Thanks tell me more.

I would advise on upgrading to Windows 8.1 as soon as possible since it does provide a lot of improvements and enhancements to the Windows 8 touch interface. Plus Windows 8.1 gives you access to Internet Explorer 11.

I've never used Shadow Explorer since I've never found a need to access the data stored in the form of shadow copies on the same drive. But make sure you still keep regular backups of your important data.

    You didn't! No worries!

Concerning Norton - it should be noted Norton is an excellent anti-malware solution. However, IMO, it (like McAfee and other big commercial "suites ") is a big rip off!

Why? Because there are several excellent "FREE" alternatives that don't charge an arm and a leg to buy initially, that then threaten users with scare tactics to shell out more cash for periodic renewals. Also, these "suites" tend to be huge resource hogs, consuming lots of disk space, RAM and CPU cycles, with no tangible extra benefits.

MBAM Free is an excellent solution for "on-demand" supplemental scanning. It does NOT provide real-time protection. You MUST pay for the Pro version for that - and in my opinion MBAM Pro is the exception - that is, it is worth the money because (1) it has a low, often discounted initial cost, but more importantly (2) no renewal fees, the initial cost is the life-time cost. :)

And I agree with Evan here. Windows 8/8.1 includes the "new" Windows Defender anti-malware program. WD in W8 is an enhanced Microsoft Security Essential (MSE) and when used with Windows Firewall, establish an excellent security solution for your computer. But regardless your "real-time" solution of choice, you still need to run periodic supplemental scans with an alternative scanner just to make sure "you" (the user, and always weakest link in security) or your security programs did not let something slip by. And I personally feel MBAM is excellent for that.

Spyware Blaster is a decent program, but I have not found it necessary with W8.

Re: MBAM Pro. Generally, it is a bad idea to run two real-time anti-malware scanners at the same time. Conflicts have been known to occur (I like it to two dogs guarding the same bone, wondering what the other dog is up to). The best case scenario is that running two at once is waste of RAM and CPU resources.

HOWEVER, MBAM Pro is a bit different, again the exception because it plays very well with other real-time solutions without conflicts, and has a small resource footprint.

How many machines can you install MBAM Pro on? Or do you have to pay for each Machine individually.

They sell different license packs, but the lifetime 1-PC license is $30, which I think is a fair price to start. But if you watch Newegg (and I am sure others) they often have promo deals for $10 or even $15 off. And again, unlike Norton, McAfee, AVG Pro and others, that is a one-time fee - no recurring renewal fees.

Note for Newegg, you can sign-up for price alerts to email you when prices drop.

I've often thought about buying the pro version (thanks for the newegg alerts). The only realtime (I think it's realtime) scanner I have now is Windows Defender for Windows 7.

EDIT: About the newegg alerts, I posted a price of 14.99. Does that mean I will receive an alert if the price drops below 14.99? (maybe I should have posted 19.99 instead)

That's not good. Windows Defender for Windows 7 is just an anti-spyware scanner - it is not a full anti-malware scanner.

For Windows 7, I recommend and use Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

Note in Windows 8, they upgraded MSE, renamed it to [the new] Windows Defender, and included it in W8.

A little reading here about MSE. Even MS doesn't really recommend it anymore. Haven't for about 4 months or so.
