Arrow Strider, I've had exactly the same problem... Once about 2 years ago and again just last week...

After doing absolutley everything I could think of, including a clean install, a close friend told me to remove the ribbon cable on my hard drive and if that did not work try replacing them... When I did this 2 years ago, I ended up replacing the cables and as it turned out, it solve the problem...
Since that time I've switched hard drives to SATA drives... and last week I found I had the problem back again.. I remember what I was told to try so I first unplugged the cables from the drive and plugged them back in, and again, that seemed to solve the problem..

If that doesn't work, try what Aries suggested... That was also a suggestion I was given 2 years ago, but I never had to go that far....

I have one 80 GB Sata for system and a IDE of 300 GB... I´ve saw some discussion in other foruns relating something about "DMA Reverts to PIO" and their only "fix" for that was "leaving a disk on the optical Drive"

Well, some people said that "temporary fix" worked for them, some said it didn´t. I unfortunately am within the group where it didn´t.
