Facebook has fair security I can setup for privacy. This site has helped me to find and contact people from my past and that is really only reason plus pictures of family & friends for this.

Currently FB and Twitter are insecure because of Firesheep. I hear that FB is working on the issue.

You know what you are talking about? That only applies if you are accessing certain websites that uses session cookies while you are connected to a non-protected WiFi network!

    Read about it here:

I hijacked someone's Facebook account with Firesheep. It was incredibly easy.

Before you call the authorities on me, the "hijack" was an experiment with a colleague's account while we were waiting for a plane, and she gave me permission. But let me tell you: Firesheep, the Firefox add-on designed to show the security holes in sites that don't use encryption for all their traffic, works as advertised.

Yes... it's a given that accessing these sites from Public Wifi is going to make us vulnerable. The point is... many folks do exactly that and this is why it is a serious problem and not one to blow off.

Yes, exactly what I said: only could happen when you are using non-secure (public) WiFi!

I would like to see some ANTI-social networks

someone should build an ANTI-social network.
I do have a Facebook account and logon about once a month.
Way too much **** to do and I rarely have anything to share.
Seems like a waste of time.

I've no interest in social networks (i.e. Facebook). I think they have their place but for the most part, I find them narcissistic. Why anyone would care what I had for breakfast or how I'm feeling throughout the day is beyond me. But it seems we have this need to tell everything to everyone. For intimate communication I use either the telephone or e-mail. Additionally... I have a life outside the internet and relatively limited time to spend (i.e. waste) online. Life is so much more interesting than simply communicating with cyber persons. Just my two cents.

I'm editing this to say that I completely agree with leushino. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I joined facebook when someone sent me some pics (I thot I had to join to see the pics). But this was a long time ago and I haven't been back since nor have I answered any of the requests to join my page.

Then why bother with a computer?

    Well said leushino.

    My thoughts Jim.

Had to do the same and like you have never used it since and just ignore requests to do so. Korn.

susanai - Computers replaced typewriters and save money in communication ie. Writing paper, Postage and envelopes and generally widen your horizons.

I do not want to share my innermost thoughts with millions of people - just those I direct it to. Hackers will do their thing - can't control that, but I can while away time in retirement with THE COMPUTER. Cheers to all on BBS. Neil.

Through Facebook I was able to connect up with distant family and friends I hadn't spoken with, or had contact with, in as much as thirty years. We were able to share information, photographs, etc., which brought us closer together despite everyone's busy time schedules.

When I was young I grew up close to my cousins, uncles and aunts. However, with the passing of time we lost all contact and after many, many, years we are now in touch and sharing on a weekly basis from many parts of the world. I can see what's going on in their lives, the births, the marriages, etc., and they know me much better now. Without Facebook this would never have happened. All in all, it's an experience more positive than negative.

By the way, did you ever wonder where so-and-so from your schooldays, or from one of your places of employment, was? With over 500 million people on Facebook there's a chance that he's there.:)

Not really and I suspect most others feel the same. So-and-so from my schooldays are of little interest to me. Those with whom I formed strong friendships continue to communicate with me by telephone and via e-mail. Like I said earlier... I don't need to peer into the lives of former schoolmates nor do I wish them to do the same with me. Of course, it's a given that social networks serve a useful purpose but I find that I do not require nor desire it. Furthermore, I know that it's one less security hazard with which I have to contend.

The company I work for greatly stresses NOT to get involved with social networks for security reasons. I read and hear about folks who for some reason lose all common sense and reasonable thinking when on these sites and I'd rather error on the side of caution . To many times today we are so connected and don't really communicate!

    Hi

I am a member of Facebook but that is only because some friends use it to communicate, otherwise I don't go near it.

    Cheers

I like to come here for socializing. Or to The Truth About Cars (ttac.com), another Web site I frequent.

I am on Facebook. I am not very involved with it, but I do find it fun and useful.

The primary way I use it is to post photos of my kids so that my family can see them. Sure I can mail photos, and often do, but it's just easier to post them so that my family can see them. This allows my family to see them immediately as well as see the photos that I wouldn't necessarily print out. Sometimes if there's a certain photo my mom wants, she just asks and then I can make one up and send it to her.

I try to avoid posting mundane details of my life and stick to the important stuff.
