Can you tell me more, as I've never heard of this?
And where would I find it?
Will this be feasible if I don't want to run the drive very often?
You hook it up, backup, then power down?

Ah, but is it THE version to own? :D
Actually do you think I will need all it's features?
(Which I haven't read about yet.)

Acronis True Image Home is the basic version - you do not need anything else. The features are there whether or not you need them.

I just noticed that Nero has a backup component. Do you know if this will do the IMAGE that Acronis does?
Also, if an image is made of the OS how does this reinstall the OS, since MS makes it so Windows cannot be copied?

No idea without checking - I suggest you look in the Help file.
The OS is not reinstalled as such - rather a functional image of the OS is copied to the drive. This is the way in which computer manufacturers preload Windows onto their computers - there are no operatives frantically stuffing CD's into new computers :)

I had no idea this was possible.
Sounds like a way for Windows to be pirated.

Not really - an installation of Windows contains a fingerprint of the computer hardware on which it was originally installed. On your own computer you can make a number of hardware changes without the need to reactivate - more detail here FYI ....

Is there an obvious way to distinguish between backup and imaging software?
This may sound brain dead, but from what I'm seeing it's not clear.

I do it a little differently. I have the OS and data on one drive. I have a second drive that holds video and data only. I installed a program called handy backup agent and configured it so that when I boot the system, it copies any new file from the data folder on my main drive to the data folder on the second drive. This way if something happens to my primary drive, the only data I lose is whatever was added since the last boot.

I had a drive fail a year or two ago and believe me, it was a lifesaver. I'm too lazy to do regular backups so this way I'm in pretty safe with my occasional back ups.

This sounds like a good way to go. I'm also lazy, but plan on running backups every couple wks, though I haven't gotten the enclosure for the 2nd drive yet.
