Hi jamon08
Welcome to windowsbbs

Please do the following, so we can see what's going on.

Download a copy of HJTsetup.exe from hereor here and save it to your Desktop.

1. Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
2. Double-click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
(By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis)
3. Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
4. Put a check by Create a desktop icon and then click Next again.
5. Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
6. At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.
7. Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.
(It will scan and the log should open in Notepad.)
8. Click on "Edit" > "Select All" to higlight the entire Notepad contents.
9. Then click on "Edit" > "Copy ".
10. Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
(Right-click in the message body field and select "Paste ".)
CAUTION: DO NOT have HijackThis "fix" anything without carefully following expert guidance. Otherwise, you might render your computer unstable or even unbootable. Most of what HijackThis finds will be harmless or even required.

Thanks
Geri

2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
• Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.

3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan ".
4. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:

Hi jamon08
Well I was hoping AVG would have killed it, but it didn't, so lets use a tougher tool.

Please download Navilog1 by IL-MAFIOSO:
http://perso.orange.fr/il.mafioso/Navifix/Navilog1.zip

* Extract its contents to the desktop.
* Double click on navilog1.exe to install it on your computer.
* When the installation is complete, the tool will start automatically.
* If it doesn't start automatically, please double click on Navilog1 shortcut on your desktop to run it.
* Press E for English from the language Menu.
* Type 1 in the next Menu to select Search and press Enter.
* Wait for the Scan to finish (It may take a reasonable amount of time)
* Press any key as requested .
* A new document will be produced: fixnavi.txt.
* Please copy/paste the contents of this report in your next reply.

Please post the fixnavi.txt log and a new HJT log.

Thanks
Geri

Hi jamon08

Before running the fix to this we need to make sure a file is bad, I can find no info on it.

So here is what we need to do.

Jotti File Submission:
• Please go to Jotti's malware scan
• Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan "box on the top of the page:
• C:\windows\system32\btqfku.exe
• Click on the submit button
• Please post the results in your next reply.

Thanks
Geri

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 10Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all.

Hi Geri,

Your the man !!

My computer is excellant, I think better than it was before I started getting the pop ups.

So what did I have ?

Should I keep any of the programs that I have installed through my little adventure ?

There are so many questions that I want to ask but I should probably use the correct forum, I wonder how many other hopeless bunnys like myself that you have to tend to and I should let you get on with the virus killing.

Mate, I really enjoyed working with you and actually looked forward to coming home from work and seeing what new tasks you had for me to perform.

Till next time take it easy buddy and keep up the work..

Cheers

Jae;)

Hi Jae
Glad to help out.

You can delete any tools you were asked to download and the files/folders or logs they created, There will be newer versions if ever needed again any way.

Navilog1
C:\fixnavi.txt <<This file
C:\cleannavi.txt <<This file

Run ATF Cleaner.

Make sure you do the restore point instructions below, you have a infection in the system restore.

We have just a few more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. (ATF Cleaner is good for this) But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
1. Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 23,000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all,
and MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

6. Install WinPatrol to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine

Now just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly.

7. Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

8. ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only, Cleans out temporary files all the garbage you collect while surfing the web.

9. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

10. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
11. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

I will mark this thread resolved.

Should I purchase Adware, Spybot and Hjt and continue myself?

Cheers

Hi Jae
Thats up to you to purchase them. But it is not necessary to do so.

Can to tell me what "strange window" is, what it may have said...please explain?
The link should have taken you to their web site and asked you to pick your language, click your language and it takes you to the download page.
Did you get something else? and what was it.

I see nothing in the HJT log, but we can look deeper. lets see if dss shows anything.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
• Close all other windows before proceeding.
• Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
• When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please do not try and clean anything yourself, unless it is with a program like SpyBot or AdAware.

We all volunteer here to help people, we like doing it.;)
Deleting files with HJT without knowing for absolute certainty what they are could cause harm to your system, many infections can use the same name as legit files. so without training it is best to let one of us help you out.

Please let me know where that link sent you, or what you got, and post the dss log.

Thanks
Geri

Hi Geri,

I did not note the website.I had the content advisor on it prompted me for my password. The site seemed to have no significance to spybot and looked strangley familiar to the annoying ones and the fact that it froz everything but my pointer, freaked me out so I used the off button to bail out.

I will take note of any spookys next time.

Hi Jae

OK few things.

Limewire should go. P2P file sharing is a excelent way to pick up infections

NoAdware v5.0 Used to be on the anti-spyware rogue list, it is no longer. but once listed I'm not sure I would trust it myself. (Your choice)
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
Note on NoAdware: NoAdware was listed on this page because of concerns with false positives and the use of aggressive, deceptive advertising (1, 2, 3) including exploitation of the name "ad-aware" (1). Earlier versions of NoAdware were also the same underlying application as Adware Hitman, Consumer Identity, Protect Your Identity, SpyBan, SpywareAssassin, Spyware C.O.P., SpywareKilla, The Adware Hunter, & TheSpywareKiller. Over the past few months, NoAdware has taken aggressive steps to reign in its affiliates (who were primarily responsible for the unsavory advertising) and released a new version of NoAdware (version 3.0) that addresses our concerns with false positves. Given these changes we can no longer regard NoAdware as "rogue/suspect" anti-spyware.

OK Please open add/remove programs list. (Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs) Remove the following.
