Time and time again the same problem keeps occuring with this:

and it always seems to be that the member has not carried out the final part which allows the System specs to be seen by others. It's obvious when you know but clearly, with so many failling to notice this final step, not obvious to many new members ( I missed it at my first attempt to display my specs).

IMO. Why would you bother to enter your system specs if you do not want anybody to see them:confused:, that would be a bit pointless. It would therefore delete this problem if the last step to enter the details was fixed by default to 'Yes' or better still the option be removed.

If this is possible it will stop many a thread having several posts in it concerning this matter. Maybe in my ignorance there is a good reason for this final choice in which case I stand corrected. Perhaps, in that case, it could be made more obvious so it doesn't get missed so often.

This is in the Private Message you get when you register:

On the Adding System Specifications to your Profile page it states:

I don't think there's anything to make it more clear. Reading instructions seems to be a dying trade :(

I quite agree, the instruction could not be clearer but as you have said reading them is a dying trade. I guess most people who come here for help don't have the time to read all the instructions, they are just desperate to get there computer working again.

The main point I was trying to raise was, why fill in the system specs if you are not going to display them, clearly nobody would do that, so why give the option. Make it "YES" by default, problem solved.

I'll check to see if that is possible.

Although I agree with your argument to an extent, people looking for help on these forums should at least show the ability to follow clearly laid out instructions.

I've been involved (and seen) a number of threads where the one asking for help has obviously not followed instruction and added a lot of time and posts to what would normally be a trivial matter.

IMHO, I'd leave the system as is, it at the very least gives us some idea of how a poster follows instructions.

I also agree with your argument to an extent;) but people don't come to this site to have their ability to follow instructions put to the test, they come here to seek help. They should not have to go through any kind of test before they get it:)

I just thought my idea would save a little of our time telling new members to follow the instructions:). I am a little surprised by the reaction:confused:.

Mark, it isn't a test as such but can help me gauge how well a poster can follow instructions, this is turn can affect how I respond. Help would still be forthcoming but perhaps instead of one post giving a series of steps I'd break it down and ask for feedback between individual steps.

To be fair, this is my own opinion, don't take my reaction as that of other posters in general.

Yup, I see where you are coming from now, further explanation made that much clearer.:):)
