Hi my acer is just so slow anymore online and will no longer load the interactive weather map on the weather channel anymore but it used to just fine. I just had this thing cleaned out in the malware section so I'm just wondering if I have stuff on this laptop that is slowing it down? I keep the cookies cleared but dont know really what else to do???

Hi dodopie. Lets see what is going on with your machine. Follow these steps to help make your computer run faster and more efficiently.

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Uninstall a Program and uninstall any programs that you do not use.

    2. In Control Panel under Programs and Features click the link that says Turn Windows Features On or Off and uncheck all the checkboxes except for Games, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0, Windows PowerShell, and Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment. Click Ok when you are done and then click on the Restart Now button when prompted. (If you use a Windows Feature that is listed then do not uncheck its checkbox)

    3. Download and run ATF Cleaner. Save the program to your desktop. After the download completes, right click on the ATF Cleaner program and select Run as administrator. When it opens select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the Empty Selected button.

    4. Run Disk Cleanup. Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Right click Disk Cleanup and select Run as administrator. When it is done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for Hibernation File Cleaner on the Disk Cleanup tab. Now click the More Options tab and under System Restore click the Cleanup button. When it asks you if you want to delete all but the most recent restore point click Yes. Now click Ok on the Disk Cleanup window to allow Disk Cleanup to remove unnecessary files from the computer.

    5. Download and run the portable version of CCleaner. Save the zipped folder to your desktop. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted open the regular folder. Run the CCleaner.exe program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When you open the program, on the Windows tab select the following boxes:

    Temporary Internet Files
    History
    Cookies
    Recently Typed URLs
    Index.dat files
    Last Download Location
    Empty Recycle Bin
    Temporary Files
    Clipboard
    Memory Dumps
    Chkdsk File Fragments
    Windows Log Files
    Old Prefetch Data
    IIS Log Files

Once those checkboxes have been selected, click on the Applications tab and deselect all the checkboxes on that tab. Then click on the Analyze button. After CCleaner has finished analyzing how much hard drive space you can free up, click on the Run Cleaner button. CCleaner will tell you that this process will permanently delete files from your system, and are you sure you want to proceed? Click on Ok to have CCleaner remove all the junk files that it found. CCleaner will then remove those files and when it is done, it will tell you that the cleaning has finished. You can now close the CCleaner program.

(Understand, that by deleting Internet cookies using either CCleaner or ATF Cleaner, if you had set your Internet browser to save your login information to your online e-mail account as an example, then you will need to re-enter that information again in order to log into that account. Internet cookies are small pieces of information in the form of small text files that are downloaded to your computer when you visit websites. These text files save your login information, so by deleting your Internet cookies, your usernames and passwords for your online accounts will need to be typed in again. If you do not want to re-input this information again then do not remove your Internet cookies using CCleaner or ATF Cleaner).

    6. Disable any Windows Services that you do not use by following, Black Vipers Services Guide.

    7. Remove any scheduled tasks that you do not need running on the machine by following the instructions in this link, Descriptions of the scheduled tasks in Windows Vista.

    8. Click Start< Right click Computer and click Properties. In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab< Under where it says Performance hit the settings button. In the Performance Options window click the Advanced tab and under Virtual Memory click the Change button. In the Virtual Memory window make sure your hard drive is selected and select the option that says System Managed Size and click the Set button. Now click Ok on the Virtual Memory window to close it. Now in the Performance Options window click the Data Execution Prevention tab and select the option that says Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select. After that is done click Ok on the Performance Options window to save the changes. Then in the System Properties window on the Advanced Tab under Startup and Recovery click on the Settings button. Under the System startup section uncheck both checkboxes that say Time to display list of operating systems and Time to display recovery options when needed. When done, click on Ok on all the windows to close them out and then reboot the computer.

    9. Click Start< Control Panel< System and Maintenance< Power Options. Once the Power Options open select the High performance power plan.

    10. You can disable the Windows Aero Interface if you do not care about all of the glass effects and clear borders for a speed improvement. Read this link, Disable Aero on Windows 7 or Vista.

    11. To improve your Windows shutdown time, decrease the delay time when opening up menus, and close non responsive programs, I have provided a registry script that will improve these areas.

To run the registry script, click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Notepad. Once Notepad opens, copy and paste the text in bold red below:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "AutoEndTasks "= "1 "
    "HungAppTimeout "= "2000 "
    "MenuShowDelay "= "1 "
    "WaitToKillAppTimeout "= "2000 "
    "LowLevelHooksTimeout "= "2000 "
    "ForegroundLockTimeout "=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse]
    "MouseHoverTime "= "1 "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control]
    "WaitToKillServiceTimeout "= "2000 "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control]
    "WaitToKillServiceTimeout "= "2000 "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
    "WaitToKillServiceTimeout "= "2000 "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem]
    "NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation "=dword:00000001
    "NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate "=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "AutoEndTasks "= "1 "
    "HungAppTimeout "= "2000 "
    "MenuShowDelay "= "1 "
    "WaitToKillAppTimeout "= "2000 "

    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "AutoEndTasks "= "1 "
    "HungAppTimeout "= "2000 "
    "MenuShowDelay "= "1 "
    "WaitToKillAppTimeout "= "2000"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
    "VerboseStatus "= "1"

Then click on File< Save and save the file with the attributes as illustrated below.

    Filename: Name.reg
    Save as type: All Files
    Encoding: ANSI

When done click on Save. Now close Notepad and navigate to where you saved your registry file. Double click on the registry file to run it. Click on Yes to continue and then click on Ok to confirm that the file has been imported into the registry.

    12. If you find the secure desktop functionality in User Account Control annoying then you can disable it for a speed improvement. Read this link, Make User Account Control (UAC) Stop Blacking Out the Screen in Windows 10, 8, 7, or Vista or you can disable User Account Control for administrators only by reading this link, Disable User Account Control (UAC) For Administrators Only.

    13. Run Check Disk on the hard drive to repair any errors in the file system. To do this click Start< Computer. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties. Then once the hard drive properties dialog box opens, click on the Tools Tab. Under where it says Error-checking click on the Check Now button. Ensure that both the Automatically fix file system errors and the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors checkboxes are both checked. After that is done click on the Start button. Check Disk will ask you to schedule the disk check when you restart your computer. Click on Yes to do this and then restart your computer to allow check disk to run.

    14. Keep Windows up to date by following this guide, Using Windows Update. Once Windows has all the latest updates from Microsoft installed, follow this guide for Securing Internet Explorer .

    15. Please download Autoruns. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted open the regular folder. Run the autoruns.exe program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When you open the program click the Logon Tab and remove any items that you do not need running on startup. Then post a screenshot of all the startup entries on the Logon Tab in your next reply.

    16. Download and run TCP Optimizer. Save the program to your desktop and then run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When the program opens, on the General Settings tab under Network Adapter selection click the option that says Modify all Network Adapters. Then at the bottom of the window where it says Choose settings, select the Optimal setting and click on Apply Changes. Click on Ok to confirm the changes and when prompted, reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.

    17. Finally, please download SecurityCheck and save it to your desktop. Right click on SecurityCheck.exe and select Run as administrator to run the program. Follow the onscreen instructions. Post the results of the checkup text file in your next reply.

    18. State how many processes are running in the Windows Task Manager.

Let me know how the computer is running after performing the above steps.

Download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When the program opens select the following boxes:

    Flush DNS
    Report IE Proxy Settings
    Reset IE Proxy Settings
    Report FF Proxy Settings
    Reset FF Proxy Settings
    List content of Hosts
    List IP Configuration
    List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    List Installed Programs
    List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click the Go button and post the MiniToolBox log in your next reply.

Since you could not uninstall certain applications due to some program errors we will use another method of removing those applications.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Download the portable version of Revo Uninstaller. (The link is at the very bottom of the download page)

    2. Save the folder to your desktop.

    3. Once the program has finished downloading, locate the zipped folder, right click it and select Extract all.

    4. After the folder has been extracted open up the folder and locate the revouninstaller.exe program.

    5. Launch the program by right clicking on the revouninstaller.exe program and selecting Run as administrator and locate the application that you want to remove.

    6. Highlight the entry and select Uninstall.

    7. A window will come up asking you which mode you would like to use to remove the program.

    8. Click on Advanced Mode and then click the Next button.

    9. Follow the steps in the Wizard and make sure that you delete all files and registry entries that are found for the program.

    10. If there is more than one entry in the programs list that you want to remove, then follow steps 6-9 again.

    11. After the removal process finishes for all the programs that you wanted to remove, restart the computer.

    12. Once the computer reboots, see if those applications have been fully removed from your machine.

Click Start< Control Panel< Uninstall a program and remove the following items:

    Acrobat.com
    Adobe AIR
    BrowseForTheCause
    Java 8 Update 65
    Java Auto Updater
    Launch Manager

For the Black Vipers services, just follow and disable the services in the Safe category according to the website. If you need help on any other section just let me know and I can clarify it accordingly.

    Download Adobe Reader 11.0.10.

Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl, Shift and the Escape key combination.

For the Autoruns screenshot, here are instructions on how to take one, How to take a screenshot. Once you have saved the screenshot, upload the screenshot to http://imgur.com/ and post the link to the screenshot in your next reply.

In Autoruns remove the following items:

    Realtek HD Audio Control Panel
    Realtek Voice Manager
    Catalyst Control Center
    CCleaner

Then reboot the computer after removing those items. Let me know how the computer is running after removing those items. Did you follow my instructions ok on all the items that I had you do?

this computer is running so much better but i didn't do all. Where you said to run the portable version of ccleaner, i had the regular ccleaner already on my computer and couldn't seem to get the portable version to download so i just used what i already had, I looked over the black viper stuff but still didn't understand it. Same with task scheduler, i don't know what i need and don't? and the user acount control i didnt do anything as i dont understand what black screen its talking about.

Fair enough. Do you have any other concerns or would you consider this thread resolved?
