If this is explained somewhere else, please direct me. I couldn't see a definitive explanation.

I need a replacement power adapter for my laptop.

The one that came with my Toshiba Satellite is a brick, and I've seen people with similar looking models with much smaller adapters. So as I need one anyway, I'd prefer a smaller, more portable one.

What do I need to check to make sure one is compatible?
    Volts?
    Amps?

I've seen people say if it has less amps than my current one it's safe, and others say it should have more.

Also the plug tip; if it fits is it safe, or are there different kinds?

I really know very little (clearly).
    Thanks!

I just meant in general, but if you can be more specific that would be awesome.

PC is a Toshiba Satellite A300 laptop
    Running Vista

    adapter is model PA3290E-3AC3

    input 100-240V~2.0A(2.0A) 50-60HZ
    output 19V - 6.32A(6.32A)

I don't even know what most of that means. If more info about the actual system is helpful, let me know. I'd have to figure out where to find most of it.
    Thanks

In addition to Pete's post regarding the connector, Make sure it's the correct polarity, just because it fits doesn't mean it's compatible.

Generally too much current (amps) isn't a problem as (if the laptop's working OK) it will only draw the amount of current it requires, too little and you could damage the supply and laptop. The voltage is important though.

I ditto everyones responses in this. Very important to get a perfectly compatible one. If you do not wanna pay for OEM from Toshiba, you might check check eBay. Key in A/C adapter for and yr model. Many reputable vendors there for such things and you will also get an idea of varying prices.

And these are all over the net. As i all things, it's a little research project. Here is only one of dozens: http://www.battdepot.com/model/Toshiba/Satellite+300.aspx?gclid=CLOthZW4gZ8CFc5L5QodPg9ZJA

And yes, they do not last forever. Some people use them with the cords bundled. Not a good idea. At all. But in this, I would not take chances; it's not an expensive part, after all, given the value of your lappy.

"Penny wise, laptop survival foolish," I believe is the aphorism here.

At work we supply two power packs with each laptop. One is a 65 Watt, the other a larger 95W. The 95W they can leave at their desk, the smaller one they can take in their bag. The 95W can have more external devices attached, the 65W is really only to run the basics.

I'm leaning towards one of these:

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Toshiba-Sate...QptZAU_Laptop_Accessories?hash=item414ba8c74d

I think it's a bit physically smaller than the original. Smaller would have been better, but if a compatible one exists, I haven't been able to find one.

While in the U.S. I thought I saw someone with a similar looking Toshiba Satellite with an AC adapter the size you see with a netbook (much smaller), but haven't seen any such thing on compatibility lists.
