[Resolved] about:blank page on Internet Explorer

    Hi all!

I need some help on spam and adware removal, particularly removing the "about:blank" page on IE6.

I've already tried following the manual removal procedure i've read from some forum (e.g. using reglite.exe, using the recovery console, and using the hijackthis), but unfotunately I didn't completely finished it since I'm having trouble using the Recovery Console on Windows XP....

....after I successfuly installing the recovery console, and after a reboot, I'm getting a blue screen.

Is there any automatic way of removing it? I'm currently using only 1 anti-spyware...the Spyware Terminator.

'Have also tried Spyware Doctor and Spybot SD, but to no avail so I uninstalled them and went back to use Spyware Terminator.

Would you recommend other reliable anti-spyware that can completely get rid of this problem?

Hope to get some good advise from you guys.

    Regards to all!

rhal has explained that the default startup webpage should be controlled by Group Policy in his/her Introduction thread:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/introductions/78665-hi-all.html
You don't say you have run
    gpupdate /force
from the command line. This should reset the default webpage.

    Hi rahl,

You said that when you start another instance of IE is when you see the about:blank
Is that by opening a new window from within the current browser, or starting a new window via the IE shortcut?

Have any apps detected malware on the computer? Any other behavior that suggests the problem is malware related?

    Hi Matt,

I realized that gpupdate could work since i'm working on a network controlled by a group policy....Thanks a lot matt for reminding me doing that!

My laptop is back to normal!:)

    Cheers!

Good one rhal. Don't forget to mention if the system is under Group Policy if you have a problem.
