    Hi everyone!

I'm a newbie on this forum.

I need some help on spam and adware removal, particularly removing the "about:blank" page on IE6.

I've already tried following the manual removal procedure i've read from some forum (e.g. using reglite.exe, using the recovery console, and using the hijackthis), but unfotunately I didn't completely finished it since I'm having trouble using the Recovery Console on Windows XP....

....after I successfuly installing the recovery console, and after a reboot, I'm getting a blue screen.

Is there any automatic way of removing it? I'm currently using only 1 anti-spyware...the Spyware Terminator.

'Have also tried Spyware Doctor and Spybot SD, but to no avail so I uninstalled them and went back to use Spyware Terminator.

Would you recommend other reliable anti-spyware that can completely get rid of this problem?

Hope to get some good advise from you guys.

    Regards to all!

Hi rhal and welcome to the BBS,

This is not the place to ask a question (submit your questions in the relevant forum). "About: blank" should be "basic" though (for anyone that knows were to find it). It comes about by going to Control Panel -> Internet options and pressing the Use Blank button.

If you want to use a specific web page for Internet Explorer to open in, navigate to that page and in Internet Options select Use Current.

About: blank is not malware, it is just a setting for Internet Explorer to open with a blank page, after that, you need to navigate to which ever page you want.

If any of the other moderators wish to move this thread to an Internet forum, I am quite happy.

    Matt
PS Another way to adjust the setting is to open IE and go to the menu Tools -> Internet Options, it is on the first (General) tab.

    Hi matt,

    Thank you for your reply.

I'm pretty sure however that its a virus or malware.

I'm an IT working for company on a Windows 2000 network environment and have setup a GP where all users will have a default website when they open the IE browser (that's our company website). And to add a bit security I've managed to limit the internet access of some users to just a few business related sites. I myself (my laptop) included on that default website access. But for some reasons, whenever I started a new IE instance, I go to the about:blank page. This started since the beginning of this week. Luckily nobody has reported to me that they're experiencing the same issue.

I've setup the Group Policy default website for more than 2 years already, and I'm not having problem since then.

I'd appreciate if the mods would move this thread to the malware forum...BTW, I also posted the same already there..

    brgds.

So obviously no need to move this there, we don't want to duplicate threads.
