You may be right regarding the problem!

As per your request, I ran SIW Sensors in a regular processing mode (no crashes), with Outlook Express, Mozilla Firefox (accessing Windows BBS!), My Documents (where SIW is), and SIW. The figures were as follows:

    Sensor Value Min Max
    ACER-2E68C49B20
    ACPI
    Temperatures
    THRM 68 °C (154 °F) 67 °C (152 °F) 68 °C (154 °F)
    Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+
    Temperatures
    Core #0 67 °C (152 °F) 67 °C (152 °F) 69 °C (156 °F)
    HTS541080G9AT00
    Temperatures
    HDD 40 °C (103 °F) 40 °C (103 °F) 40 °C (103 °F)

Then, I ran the MS-Defrag which crashes. The only other programme running was the SIW -- I shut everything else down when doing a Defrag. The temperatures went right up, reaching the following a second before the crash (it always crashes at the same point, 60 percent of Analyse completed; these figures are at 58 percent:

    Sensor Value Min Max
    ACER-2E68C49B20
    ACPI
    Temperatures
    THRM 91 °C 60 °C 91 °C
    Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+
    Temperatures
    Core #0 99 °C 58 °C 99 °C
    HTS541080G9AT00
    Temperatures
    HDD 38 °C 36 °C 38 °C

Please note, as previously stated, I used to be able to run a Defrag -- and a Norton Anti-Virus Full System Scan. I can now only run the Norton Anti-Virus Quick System Scan. Everything else is still (for now) running.

Your thoughts on the problem? Possible solution?

I appreciate your assistance and determination in dealing with this issue!

Try to determine if the system's fans are still running & if so, if they need to be cleaned.

    PC is a laptop;fans work

    Hi Arie,

The fans do work. They do not run continuously, but run intermittently when it needs to cool the PC.

Please note that this is a laptop PC. I cannot tell if the fans need to be cleaned, given I can hear them, but not see or access them safely.

Question: If the problem is the fans, then most if not all programmes would overheat the PC (I think). Instead, only certain programmes have this crashing impact recently, such as MS-Defrag and Norton Anti-Virus Full System Scan.

By the way, the SIW sensors, with Outlook Express, My Documents, Mozilla Firefox (running Windows BBS) and SIW have the following current temps which seem fine.

    ACPI: 50 C; Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+ 51 C; HDD 33 C

That is my point -- the overheating seems to occur with a few programmes, generally those taking control of the system such as MS-Defrag and Norton Anti-Virus Full System Scan. But Norton Utilities, which also takes control of the system, runs fine.

As a matter of fact, the fan just kicked in right after I checked the SIW Sensors in this note.

    Please advise.

Yea, I knew that from your post #11

You can still blow out the fan with compressed air.

No, what I think is happening is that a program that taxes the CPU will cause the problem.

Make sure you have the AMD Processor Driver installed.

Also get the AMD Power Monitor.

I took a look at the fan through the grille and it looks clean. By compressed air, are you referring to a specialised type of vacuum cleaner for cleaning PCs?

Also, thank you with regard to the AMD Processor Driver and Power Monitor. I will let you know if they work, and if it solves the problem.

    Many thanks!

Just some compressed air you can buy in most shops that carry electronics/computers.

    Hi Arie,

I downloaded both the AMD Processor Driver and Power Monitor. I only installed the Processor Driver, holding off on the Power Monitor to keep the load on the PC down.

The result so far has been good. I was able to run defrags (one big one, and a smaller one to cleanup what was left) and the Norton Anti-Virus Full System Scan, with no crashes. I also have run a few videos from YouTube, one 3:25, another 2:30 and a third 0:40 with no problems.

So, things look good. Programmes that tax the CPU seem to be kept under control.

My thought (your input) is that the problem is one of 'Fatware' -- as updates come for products over time, they put more and more stress on the CPU from 2005. Hence the Processor Driver regulates the load.

Which brings up a question. Where do you get the information on products such as the Processor Driver? It would have helped to know there was something to help the CPU. The reason I am asking is that there are other problems, not as severe, that would help if there was a good resource access. For example, my Acer PC has always had the problem of the cursor bouncing around the text, causing text to be entered in the wrong place. This is whether it is an e-mail, or a Word document.

Your support has been great. I will, however, keep this discussion thread open for a week or so to check to make sure things are now working OK, particularly the crashing problem.

    Hi Arie,

Yesterday I ran several YouTube videos with no problem. As noted, I was able earlier in the week to run Defrags and Norton AntiVirus. A week without crashes! It seems that the problem is cleared due to the installation of the AMD Processor Driver.

    Many thanks!
