From 1999-2004 I was using Windows 98. I now have a new computer that's equipped with Windows XP. Whenever I try to enter a chatroom on any site, I always get a message that says "Participating requires a Java Enabled Browser. " My question is, how exactly do I go about "Java Enabling" my browser? As you can tell, I'm not really sure as to exactly what that means. Incidentally, my browser is Explorer.

Get Java Runtime Environment (JRE) here then make sure your browser is Java enabled.

Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced and scroll about halfway down the list.

I don't think Microsoft are allowed to bundle JRE anymore as it belongs to Sun Microsystems.

go to "tools" in the IE bar, then to "options ", then to the "security tab ".

next, go to "custom level "

now scroll down to "scripting of Java applets ", make a check mark in the circle for "enable ".

    hit apply/ok

you may have to restart IE to set the new settings.

    IDLERACER--Do you have a folder C:\Program Files\Java?
If not, you probably do not have Java on your PC and you may have to follow both the above suggestions in the order given. One installs Java. The other enables it.
There is a test to see if you have Java on your PC, but you need it to be enabled to use the test! :)

New Puter came with Windows XP(home) (SP2 pre-instaled) and
    Internet Explorer (6.0.2900.2180.xpxp_sp2)

Looking at >> Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced ---
    Reviewing the entire list -
I can't find the word "Java" mentioned on
    ANY of the checkbox lines!

    I DO have a Programs folder (31mb) "j2re1.4.2" under "Java ".

When I tried the Sun "Java Test ", it opens a BLANK box -
and doesn't seem to be "testing" anything except my patience.

Starting to wonder if I DO have an operational Java ??

    Phred--
If you have Java installed, then look again. This time under "Java" about halfway down the list in Advanced, just above the
Multimedia category. (It is not on a Checkbox line.)
If no luck, then perhaps download Java again (from http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp as Norman_Law has suggested) to make sure you have the latest installation files and install it.

    I hope I'm not totally HiJacking IDLERACER's thread! :(

You're *hinting* that "Java" should appear in "Advanced" as
    a Subject Header (NOT a checkbox) ?? ... It doesn't appear!

No "Java" ANYwhere on the list - not as a Subject nor as a checkbox item!

    BUT:
    "Java" folders DO appear in C:\Program Files and C:\Windows;
and there are two .exe files:
    java.exe and javaw.exe

    AND:
This entry appears in Add/Remove Pgms ~
    "JAVA 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2" size = 61.63MB

This all now begs several Questions:

    1) Do I "WANT" Java??

    2) Why doesn't or didn't Java "self install " when the puter first fired up with
the Gateway provided "Factory Load "?? (Windows XP(home) With SP2)

    3) IS/are the "Java" files just waiting to be "installed "??

    4) Are these files "old" (and soon to be Non-supported) Microsoft version Java;
    or possibly SUN-provided Java?
(I think MS still holds a license to distribute Java)

    5) Other threads give bits & pieces of the "Java Story" - two have mentioned
problems with conflicting MS and SUN versions of Java on the same machine!

    6) Should I ask Add/Remove Pgms to DELETE the "JAVA 2 Runtime SE v1.4.2 "
before or after I try anything else?

    am I.

I'd uninstall the old one and then download the newest version. Something's definitly not right with yours.
Probably. If you haven't missed it yet, you more than likely will sometime in the future.
MS took it their java out of SP2 because of a law suit brought by Sun. So, if you want it you have to download it. The exception to this would be if your SP2 is an upgrade from the original XP or SP1. In that case you should have MS Java. If your computer came with SP2 installed, you won't have it.
If it shows up in add>remove programs it's already installed, though, as I said before, something is wrong with it somewhere.
No, they're Sun Java files. Don't think MS can distribute it either.
Some seem to have problems for some reason or another. Personally, I've never had a problem with both versions being installed.
    Yes. I would anyway.

 Whoa, this has gotten a bit complicated. I manually downloaded an application from that website (jre-1_5_0_04-windows-i586-p-iftw) and I seem to be having trouble making it do anything on my computer. Right-clicking on the application and looking at the "Properties" tab reveals a whole bunch of weird goings-on. Under "Security" there's a sign that reads: "This File Came From Another Computer And Might Be Blocked To Help Protect This Computer " followed by an "Unblock " button, which I'm not sure if I should press or not.

Incidentally, I checked the Tools> Security> Custom Levels> Scripting Of Java Applets, and it was already enabled. I noticed that alot of the "Active X Control " devices are not enabled, if that means anything.

The chat room I'm attempting to enter says, "Sorry, but you need a Java 1.1.x enabled browser to use this chat. " Will I be able to enter if I can manage to open this application?

IDLERACER - Have you actually double clicked on that "jre-1_5_0_04-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe" file to install the application? Just downloading the file is not enough for Java to work on your PC.

IN IE tools/ internet options/ advanced
Do you have "enable third party browser extensions" checked? You must check this and restart to use Sun Java

The answer is yes to both Norman Law and oshwyn 5 posts. I tried double clicking (or rather, right-click>open) on the application and nothing happened, and the "enable third party browser extensions" box is checked. Could it be that my Norton anti-virus software is preventing something from happening?

You could try disabling 'on demand/access scan' on your anti virus software (allways a good idea anyway when installing applications, though you should scan the file first before you run it). Then double click the .exe file. If nothing happens open 'task manager' (ctrl-alt-del) and see if the process is running. Also make sure you are logged on with administrator access rights as normal users will not have sufficient rights to install applications.

Alright, here's what's happening now. When I double-Click it, a window pops up entitled "Windows Installer " with a little sign that says "Preparing to Install. " The problem is, it just sits there (for over a half hour now) as if something is keeping it from finishing it's job. I guess I'll try fiddling around with the anti-virus software.

Did you download the installer or the full install?
It sounds like you downloaded the installer which analyzes your system and goes online to get more files ; but your firewall is blocking it.

    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Click on the offline installation download.
It will be huge, since it contains lots of things you will not need installed, just in case.

    Well ... :D ... I got MY Java running!! ;)

Turns out the v1.4.2 Java2 Runtime Environment DOES come bundled with Windows XP (home) SP2 ...

It just doesn't turn itself "ON" ...
and they do a *fine job* of Hiding the darn On/Off Switch!

    After re-reading several of the "hints" suggested here;
I went back to http://www.Java.com and really studied their HELP section.

Here's what became the Magic Bullet for me:

www.Java.com / HELP / Configuration / Enable Java Runtime Environment (JRE) through the Control Panel

    SYMPTOMS: Applets do not run.

    CAUSE :
The Java control panel is not configured to use the web browser.
If the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is already installed but applets do not work,
you may need to enable the JRE for your web browser.

    SOLUTION:
To see whether your browser is configured to use the
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or not,
first open the Windows Control Panel...
    * From the Start menu button, select Settings, then
    * Control Panel to open the Control Panel.
You should see the Java Coffee Cup logo icon in the Control Panel.

Double-click the icon to open the Java Control Panel.
In the Java Control Panel, click the Advanced tab.
Under Settings, click on + icon in front of <Applet> tag support.
Make sure the box next to Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla is checked.
    If it is not checked,
click the checkbox to enable the JRE for your Web browser.
    Click Apply.

If you do not see the coffee cup icon in the Windows Control Panel,
you do not have the latest version of the Sun JRE installed on your computer.

Yeah ... It works a lot better when ya Turn It *ON*!

    -----------------

I went back and tried to run the "Java TEST" on the Java, com site >>>www.Java.com / HELP / TEST

WOW! The Test ran and told me I had to "old" version 1.4.2 and
I should UpGrade to the currrent version.

Tried that, and the UpGrade to
    "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 (size = 118.0 MB) "
ADD itself to my hard drive ...
and did NOT seem to replace or modify the original entry of
    "Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2 (size = 61.63MB) "

    Silly Me -
I had *hoped* the "Upgrade" would have either modified the original
files or removed them ... instead the "New Stuff" was just added.

Wonder if Mr. Sun will bother to answer an E-mail asking what to do with
    the "old" v 1.4.2 Files??

Hope alll this helps some other  Folks!!!

Thanks! This worked. What I did wrong was download the Online version instead of the Offline version. Many thanks to all of you for your help!

Mr. Sun DID answer -within a few hours, no less!

I basically asked did I need the "old" v1.4.2 files?
    Here's the answer:

"Thank you very much for your interest in Java(TM) technology.
We highly encourage you to spend some time reading the solutions published on the Java.com Help and FAQ pages.

The reason older versions are not removed or overwritten is because there are still some older applications certified against the older versions of JRE, and it is necessary for you to keep the older versions of JRE to keep your older applications working. However, you are not required to keep all the versions installed on your system to ensure that Java runs properly. This depends entirely on your requirements. If you are into testing some applications with different JRE versions, then this may be good idea to keep all the versions.

For normal usage, keeping the latest version only is recommended. You can keep latest version 1.5.0_04 and can remove other versions safely. For instructions please check from:
    http://java.com/en/download/help/uninstall_java.xml

Thank you very much for contacting Sun Microsystems. Java.com "“ The Source for Java Technology.

    Regards,
    Consumer Java Support
    Sun Microsystems, Inc.

The answer seems to say both "YES" and "NO" = ???

    1) If you may run into an "older application" - KEEP the old version.

    2) If you're "normal ", dump the old version and just keep the new one.

Well, at least they ANSWERED! ;)

    Till HD space gets a lot tighter than it is on this new machine;
I think I "ll "hang onto" the old Java.

THANKS to All for the helpful suggestions!! :)

FWIW, my guess is that you can get rid of the older versions. I would and have and have never missed anything. It's kinda nice to see that you got a reply to your question though. At least you know somebody's there. :)
