I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC laptop. I've had it for about 2 or 3 years, but the for the past few months I've been having some problems with it. It started subtly but now it's doing it all the time.

First off, when the laptop goes into "sleep mode" and I go to turn it back on, there's a black screen that says "Restarting Windows" with a loading bar. There's now a big green oval above the words. It looks like a problem with my screen, but that's the only screen it shows up on. Honestly, this is the least of my worries but it may give a clue as to what the rest of my problem is.

My screen will turn yellow and start flickering. Once and awhile, the screen will turn black and I have to readjust the top of the laptop to see my screen again. The yellow is just a tint, not a solid color, and the flickering is just an annoyance, it doesn't hinder my viewing of the screen. My screen also looks pixely every now and then. Like green splotches on my wallpaper picture that flickers as well.

I can handle this problem now, but I don't want it to get worse or turn into an even bigger problem, like not being able to see my screen. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I've tried googling the problem, but I can't find much. I found something about an inverter, but my computer's "symptoms" don't match exactly.

Hi lbwhite89, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

By the looks of your problem I would say that the labtop screen is failing. If you have an external monitor see if you can hook it up to the labtop and test the issue.

Another option you can try is you can update your graphics driver for the graphics card and test the issue with the new driver installed.

Does the flickering happen when you first boot up Windows and stay that way the entire time the computer is on or does it only happen when you resume the computer from sleep mode?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

I tried to add my System Details but I don't know where to find most of that information. I put the little bit that i know though. I'm not good with all of this tech stuff, sorry!

How can I find out for sure what it is? Can the Geek Squad help me or do I need to take it to someone more qualified? And if it is a failed screen, how much would that cost to fix?

How do I get a new driver installed?

And to answer your question, it does it all the time, not just when I restart it.

Well since the computer flickers all the time then my suspicion is correct that the screen is probably on its way out. As far as getting the screen fixed if it indeed is a bad screen then it probably will cost a decent amount of money. How much, I don't know since it depends on how expensive the new labtop monitor is and who you hire to repair it for you.

Geek Squad might be able to repair the labtop monitor for you but I would probably look elsewhere since they tend to charge very high prices for their computer services which IMO you can get much cheaper by looking elswhere.

As I said in my last post, do you have an external monitor that you can hook up to the labtop to test the issue?

Without knowing what Windows OS you are running and what graphics card you have I can't recommend the appropriate graphics drivers that you need to install. Follow the instructions in the link that I posted to fill out your System Details in full, thanks.

I want to have you install a new version of your graphics driver first to rule out any software issues. Also by using an external monitor to test the picture quality on the labtop that will ensure that the graphics card is working properly and that it would just be the labtop monitor that needs to be replaced.
