Resolved How to open IE8 32-bit instead of 64-bit

    The OS is Windows 7 64-bit. I have already made a short-cut for IE8 32-bit, so there is no problem to open an IE8 32-bit and then enter an Internet URL address.

    The problem is: when I click on the hyperlinks from a program/ebook (e.g. SketchUp), it opens up IE8 64-bit.

    Is there a way to change the default in Window 7 64-bit to open IE8 32-bit?

    Perhaps quick check to see if you have made IE32 default:
    Set your default web browser to IE8 32-bit? Either through the Set Default Programs icon in control panel or via the web browser's settings options setting.

    NOTE*Default Programs may also be accessible via the startbutton>rightside listed links, dependent upon your settings for such. Or just type filter word "default" on the search line in startmenu.

    Yes, that's a reason I need to use IE8 32-bit.


    Already checked. There're choices like Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari and FireFox. Both the notebook and desktop are default to IE but it can't tell if they are 32-bit or 64-bit. But on the notebook, it opens IE8 32-bit while the desktop opens IE8 64-bit. I might have dit it once on the notebook but I just couldn't remember how I did it. How can I specify them to run the 32-bit version?

    The problem solved as follows:

    1. From Start > Run ... > enter cmd to Open, click OK button

    2. Type netsh winsock reset

    3. Restart the computer

    The next time I opened an IE 8, it used IE8 32-bit instead of 64-bit. And the Flash Player worked just fine.

    Open up Task Manager - Processes (with IE open) - Image Name and look at the iexplore.exe entry ....

    iexplore.exe*32 is the 32 bit version, iexplore.exe is the 64 bit version.

    Oh, what I referred was the default program to choose from Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs, where I can only choose Internet Explorer, but not able to select *32 or 64-bit.

    I also want to mention that the "Netsh winsock reset" seems to be per User Account. In the PC I did it for one User Account, but it happened when another User logged-in.

    That I understand, but you also posted the quote in my last post re. not knowing which version of IE was running - I pointed you to where you could determine which version was running :)

    petec i wish i had seen how to figure out what bit ie8 was before. i got security essentials for ie8 32. task manager says i got the 64bit. an oops or a big oops? and could that be the reason that se is always red on start up?

    According to your 'My System' you are running an x32 bit OS - no x64 software will run on x32 systems.

    In Task Manager on a 32 bit system only 32 bit IE is available and is shown in Task Manager as iexplore.exe. You are not running IE 64 bit :)

    If the Security Essentials icon is always red on start up and remains so check that the most current definition updates are installed.

    If they are and the icon remains red open SE and check that everything is green

    If not start a new thread.
