Turn the computer off, open the case and take a look.

By the way - I'm running an extended diagnostics test right now with the Dell CD I described above. IS that any good?

I don't know, but I know, that the only fool-proof diagnostic tool comes from mentioned manufacturer tools.

    OK.
so in order not to continue bothering the both of you with my million questions - I'll try to ask everything here:

When I open the computer, will it be obvious where the make and model are written and which numbers refer to them?
once I find the numbers, download the bootable CD and check the hardware - what next? (if there aren't any hardware problems, that is. If there are, I imagine I must replace something).

    Thank you,

We can only go one step at a time.
Run the diagnostic tool and we'll go from its results.

I can't continue right now - I must go. I'll run it tomorrow and post the results.
And again, thanks for the immediate help.

    Hello,
Once I make the diagnostic CD and boot from it, should I pick extended test or quick test?
note: yesterday I preformed an extended test from the Dell diagnostic CD which came with the computer. All was all right. Is it nessesary to preform another one with the this CD (western digital).

Manufacturer test is always more reliable.
    Run extended test.

OK - I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a bootable CD - looking at the contents of the CD DLCLICE.TXT is there (screenshot).

Does it show on your CD?

I can't go any further as all my hard drives are Samsung and Hitachi.

Although I agree with broni that using the drive manufacturer's disk diagnostics is the best way the fact that the Dell diagnostics picked up no issues is encouraging.
