Who or what is freedb? What currently happens when you try to use it?
Does this happen while using the pc or after it sits idel?
It depends on if you can find XP drivers for the machine. Some you can and many you can't... Course Dell and a few others still sell lappy's...
You can't use Xcopy to Windows....Any and all files that are in use by Windows will not copy. If the new drive didn't come with cloning...

Did you have the file in question open at the time? Try rebooting the pc and go straight to trying to copy.
Are the DVD rented type or home made where the original recording might be bad?

Nope Not True. If you do a File->Save - it'll sit in the Draft folder till you manually open the mail and click the send button.
