I would turn it on. It can give you an advance warning that a hard drive is failing.
Try rebooting the pc.
Device Manager->IDE/SATA Controllers-> See which mode the drives are running in. Should be Ultra DMA and Not PIO mode.
Food for thought...To avoid dual booting - UNplug you hard drive during the Vista install to the SSD.
