Which application opens the image when you select preview? Does the same application open Both times?
For what little you're wanting to do, almost any pc would do harware wise. As with any task, the more processing power/ram you have - the happier...
It's always slow the first many days;) But for some good news: Use Windows 7 Free (for Awhile)...

My guess would be that the mail wasn't sent. All my sent mail always goes to the sent folder.
