Which anti virus software are you using? As I recall - if you're using the new Microsoft Security software - it disables Defender from working.
Does the BIOS have an option to boot off external device? Does the external drive work on other machines?
Just how certain are you that the machine has XP on it? Is the key code sticker still on the machine? Do they still have the invoice/paper...

Have you looked through all of the options? Usualy there is an "account" function where you would add an email account. Course Gmail mails...
What were you doing when you got the error? Were you trying to open a pdf file? If so, have you installed a PDF reader program?

Make sure your DELTED ITEMS folder is empty. You should copy your PST file that holds all of the mail and contacts and then Compact the file......
Is the pc in use most of the time before switching or is it sleep mode or hybernation?
