I haven't used sfc /scannow in Vista either but i did several times with XP and I don't remember having to re-install any Windowsupdates after it....

Maybe I wasn't as clear as I could be . Press Ctrl + the "@" button at the same time and then let them both go. Then press the vowel. HTH....
