Have a look at this Microsoft article: Why can't I create a homegroup? Personally I don't use HomeGroup. I prefer good-old networking & sharing.
I doubt you'll find a 7,200rpm drive with IDE/PATA interface... but if you would, that would be fine.
You'll have to first re-create the HomeGroup.

Just as a FYI, this seems mostly the case with Windows XP.
