In Outlook->Tools->Options->Mail Format tab->there are two option about MS Word. Uncheck them since they are known to cause problems like this.

As a general rule you don't open backup files....Quicken can probably restore them for you should the occassion arise.
What happens in IE when you go to Tools->Options->APPEARANCE Color button?
