I believe that says very clearly that in that machine the Linksys ( or any network card ) will not live together peacefully with modem installed...

That is a FALSE reading. On a Dlal-up connection you will not connect at anything higher than 53.3 ( regardless of what the systray shows)...

If it is hanging up at boot up there imay be an IRQ conflict. May be just a guess but do you have an Internal Modem still installed ? If so...
