Which anti virus software are you using? As I recall - if you're using the new Microsoft Security software - it disables Defender from working.
Does the BIOS have an option to boot off external device? Does the external drive work on other machines?
Just how certain are you that the machine has XP on it? Is the key code sticker still on the machine? Do they still have the invoice/paper...
