    XP made hard drive "read only"

    Since you have used Linux, I presume you have formatted it with FAT/FAT32 file system. Try to run chkdsk /f on the drive.

    Windows XP activation (or non activation) does not makes a hard disk unresponsive. There has to be some hardware issue involved.
