I never upgraded. I've always chose to Zero out the drive then install the new OS. But that's my personal choice.
Why not skip installing Vista and just install Win 7.
Don't forget to back the registry.
Start\run\regedit\H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify. BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST.
Start\run\regedit\H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall. Check everthing in the Uninstall Key. Hope this helps.
