Yes you should be able to change the drives on the ribbon cable after changing the jumper pins on the drives.
Sounds like she also needs to check the BIOS to see if she can switch the DVD to be the first in the boot order...
Course, the "disc" is probably a DVD and will only work in the DVD drive... And of course it needs to be the bootable device.
