I'm not running XP, but I believe it's something like: My Computer, right-click the drive, Properties, Tools, Check Now..., Select Options, Start....

Have you gone to device manager.....removed your sound (the one with the yellow exclamation mark).....and rebooted to see if Windows re-detects...
