Why not simply click on the time in the Taskbar - available regardless of which program is open ......
In Outlook 2007 there is an option to empty the Deleted Items (Trash) folder on exiting Outlook - may be a similar option in 2013.
It should do apart from a warning that you have hidden updates. The only difference between automatic updates and notify is that with the latter...

You can either back up the entire registry or, more simply, export the entries that you intend to change before changing. Thereby you have a way...
