Have you tried booting the machine to safe mode, using the CTRL key? Have you tried a boot disk?
As BB has already stated......... you'll need to disable system restore. Then run an antivirus again. How to disable system restore. Free...

Can you enable active desktop and see if hide icons becomes an option under customize when you right click on the desktop? If not............

Ok...... have you tried swapping mice? Tried updating drivers? Perhaps here? Removed from device manager..rebooted and let Windows re-detect?
Can you tell us a bit more? Is it a wireless? Does it need a battery change? Have you tried switching to another?
