turn off the welcome screen and they go away.
always backup before u do anything disk level but ... fixboot won't do any real damage unless something is done broke or setup wrong really.
create passwords. win on networks w/ xp almost requires them. this will fix u'r issues. make em the same on both machines and u'r pretty much done...

i'd start by checking the drive maker's site for firmware updates. ditto on MB chipset/bios updates if the drive firmware is current or the update...
that's xp home and the recovery console ... u SURE u had something else here? u should also define u'r system specs exactly as it's unknown if...
does the drive show in mycomputer? if so, can ur RCLICK and choose 'explore' to see files?
i'd bet the new drive install has some affect here ... when u 'do the damaging one' ... what drives are listed? i'd think that there's an option...
