shot in the dark = reduce the avaiable number of 'new file types' on the system. i think tweakui powertoy can do this.
my .02 if u'r on a network and/or have internet access via any machine running a multiuser os (nt/xp/2k/other), it's a really bad idea to bypass...

yep - u can't change the system drive letter after the install. curious as to the reason u installed to i: at reinstall? - u can reinstall again...
what make/model card currently? it sounds like it's either not dirx compatible w/ the version of dirx u'r running, it's drivers are corrupt or not...
i'd be very concerned about the boot error. this is normally a really bad sign. check u'r event logs for disk hits as this one may be headed down...
note that SATA is usually an F6 install if it's primary/boot. the docs that come w/ it should advise of 'how to' and provide the proper drivers...
does bios see the drives? if so, does devicemanger see them and are they working here? if bios doesn't see them, the pc never will. use...

do u have another monitor? if so, use it to boot in normal mode, then adjust u'r scan rate to something the sampo can 'do'. then switch monitors.
