My OS is Windows 7 64-Bit with IE11. Toward the end of last month my previous hard drive crashed due to bad sectors. I could recover no data; so I could only have a new hard drive installed with a newly installed Windows 7. Last week I enrolled in a virus protection service where, at my choice they installed Kaspersky Total Security. I cannot be sure that Kaspersky caused the problem since I only noticed the problem over the last two days. Windows Update continually runs without ending. I have applied all the recommended repair measures, including those at the command line involving stopping and restarting services, stopping and restarting in Administrative Tools/Services, Microsoft Fixit 50202 and FixWU.exe. Right now the stand-alone installer for KB3172605 runs as I post this. The only measure left to try is Windows Treaking Tool. Is there anything else I can try before installing the Tweaking Tool? I am assuming that the installer now running will just keep running without installing. Thank you.

Did you download KB3172605 and attempt to install it from the computer? For my suggestion to work, it has to be installed locally.

Try disabling Windows Update in settings, restart the computer and when it is up and running, immediately attempt to install KB3172605. If it installs, you will be prompted to restart the computer. After the restart, change the setting for Windows Update to "check for updates but let you decide ". Give it some time to do the check. On a fresh installation (am I right assuming that?) it may take a while.

By the way, if it is a fresh installation, consider installing the Windows 7 SP1 convenience rollup prior to installing anything WU comes up with. The "rollup" doesn't come via Windows Update but has to be downloaded. Notice the prerequisite KB3020369 (and SP1) which also has to be downloaded and installed prior to the "rollup ". When the "rollup" has been successully installed, let WU check again.

Christer, "...if it is a fresh installation..." it is a replacement drive that did not have any OS on it before. I downloaded the update into my Downloads folder, from which I tried to install it. The program has been running ever since I began this post. KB3172605, what I am trying to install, was not on my computer beforehand; but SP1 was as I believe it came with the computer. KB3020369 is not on; so I will have to follow your above post. Thanks for the helpful information. I do not know if this site's moderators and users experienced this; but I had to open IE11 to download the prerequesite. The download button would not work in Firefox.

You must use IE11 with Microsoft Update Catalog (to get the "rollup "). The reason is that it installs an ActiveX control and FF doesn't know what that is. Microsoft Download Center works with FF or at least it should.

I do not know why things work this way; but even though my Installed Updated did not show that the prerequisite program was installed, its downloaded installer did. Then I was able to install the rollup, which brought up the normal Windows Update box. After that installed, Windows Update ran and detected 19 important updates which I installed. There was one optional one that uninstalls Windows Journal. I thought I selected that one; but Windows Update detected it again. So, I selected it again. Now, my Windows 7 is up to date. Thanks. I knew I missed something in these repair steps.

Good news that WU got running. Which version of the components is installed? Check C:\Windows\System32\wuauclt.exe and the properties > version should be 7.6.7601.23453 with KB3172605 (the most recent update to WUC) installed.

If you feel that the issue has come to a conclusion, mark the thread as solved.
