Resolved Laptop unresponsive after usb plugin

Hi everyone, first time posting here so please let me know if I'm breaking any rules!

This incident happened just a few minutes ago and has left me confused. I'm running Windows 10 on an Asus laptop, a few years old and to be perfectly honest pretty beaten up. It's been working fine lately. I just went to plug in my iPhone to a USB port that I don't typically use, and the screen turned off immediately. I initially thought it had shut off completely but that's not the case: it is still running with the leds at the bottom and on the power button lit like normal. I then tried pressing keys, clicking the trackpad, pressing the power button and even holding it down for up to 30 sec. It won't respond to anything, even the force shut down. My phone is not picking up a charge either. Has anyone ever heard of this before? It hasn't been acting strange lately.
