Ok, then you did an upgrade installation. You can perform a clean install if you wish but how is the computer running now?

The upgrade installation failed though. The computer is doing fine with 8.1. Every try I made to install 10 has failed. Today I'm going to try and change the boot order to see if I can boot from the windows 10 usb. Before I just opened the win10 file and run the setup.exe as administrator. That failed also but going to see if this makes a difference. If not I guess I'll try the full install without keeping his files and settings. How will I get his internet connection back if that is lost in the process?

If you perform a clean install then you will need to reinstall the drivers for your hardware devices so I would download the drivers for your motherboard chipset, network, video card, audio, etc. and put those setup files on a USB flash drive for use when you finish performing the clean install of Windows 10.

This computer would not let me change the boot order. I'll try to get the drivers and do a clean install.

What is the Product Number(P/N) of the HP Notebook. There are different models and versions. Make sure your A/C Adaptor is unplugged remove the battery. Look in the battery compartment it's the number following P/N. If HP Support Assistant is installed click on it on the bottom informational strip it will be listed there. If HP Advisor is installed go to the dashboard it will be listed in that bottom informational strip. It's also listed in the BIOS(But we rather you did not play around in there).

You may have misread the P/N. When I research my HP resources it can not find that particular P/N. I'm pretty sure you meant 64-bit OS.

I got the P/N from HP support assistant. Not sure if it began with LO or L0. A closer look and it look more like L0.

Referring to post #23: Is there a program that can get the needed drivers from the computer and let me save them to a usb?

No, you will need to manually visit the HP website and put in your model number of the computer that you have and download the drivers individually.

Do you need assistance with finding the drivers for your machine?

Is there a way I can find out which drivers are already on the computer? HP's site has several to choose from.

Yes you can open Device Manager and expand each category to figure out what hardware devices your computer has.
