I am trying to get Remote Desktop working again after updates broke it. I think this update will fix it but it will not install.

I've gone thought all the routine suggestions but none work. Can someone figure out why this fails? TIA.

    Have you seen .....

Windows Update error 800f0826 which suggests that the failure of another update is causing the problem.

Thanks but how do I identify what update is causing the problem? I have 7 failed updates in the history but even though they say failed, when I tried to install a couple manually it tells me it is already installed. I did not try each and every one. Do I have to go through that agony one at a time or is there an easier way? I guess I will try them all manually.

As an aside, why do they say failed but are installed?

Hi gw1500se, If you go > Control Panel > Windows Updates > Installed Updates (lower left of page) you will see ALL correctly installed MS updates.
If you look at > View update history > you will see all entries good or bad.
It will show where the update Failed and you may see an entry further on where it was installed correctly later on.
It just takes a bit of checking. Have a look at the entry date and relate that to when your problem occurred regarding Remote Desktop. Neil.

After going through the agony of figuring all this out (not being able to copy/paste these in these windows is a real PITA) it boiled down to not being able to install ANY of the updates associated with remote desktop. Which, of course, is exactly what I need to fix.

    KB2592687 - original error

    KB2830477
    KB2913751:
For some reason when I click the "Get help with this error" link, the list does not contain the errors in question so I had to google them. It appears to me that the two 800F0826 errors are being caused by the 80080005 (KB2830477) error. That error seems to be like a rash on the internet. I found many different causes, none related to remote desktop, so have no clue what to do next.

Your assumption is correct. I guess it has been a long time since I updated my profile. I will fix that shortly. In the mean time I'll look through those articles and get back. They did not show up in my search. Thanks.

Installing the system readiness tool solved the problem. Why is that hotfix not automatically installed. It does not show up even as an optional update?

Its because its a troubleshooting tool and you should only install it when you are having issues with installing other Windows Updates.

If users are having no issues with installing Windows Updates then there is no reason to install a new version of the tool when the tool gets updated.
