Helping a friend with new Windows 7 Home Dell computer. When I try to open IE11, it opens quickly but all we see is a blank IE11 window and I can't get to any tools such as to change home page or to reset as most of the options are grayed out.

I thought that uninstalling IE11 and re installing it might do the trick. However, Microsoft says that IE11 can't be uninstalled as it is a component of Windows7. Their suggested fix - uncheck IE11 via "Turn Windows features on and off" - didn't work. Unchecked, restarted, checked, and restarted again.

I found some other suggestions that said one could uninstall IE11 through the "View installed update" in the Control Panel. I would assume if it is uninstalled in that manner, if you then go to Windows Updates, it would identify IE11 as an update to be installed and could then be reinstalled.

I don't want to mess up friend's computer so I thought I would run it by this Board first. Any thoughts?

Unless MS changed it, I uninstalled IE 11 and it reverted back to IE 10. I had problems on this PC with it making my Gadgets weird looking colors. It didn't do it on my Laptop. I still have 10 on here.
Just go to Control Panel and uninstall it and then reboot.

Have you tried accessing Internet Options through the Control Panel?

Mitch. This is the same as accessing it in Tools in IE. What would you do there?

I was just thinking if the option is greyed out when IE is open, it may or may not be if accessed from the control panel. Just a thought.

Thanks for the input Mitch and BrBill. I tried using the Control Panel to reset the internet options but that didn't have any effect.

I used the control panel to uninstall IE11. Then restarted but it appeared that nothing had changed. Then I ran Windows Update and it found a Security Update for IE10. I installed that and then rebooted and IE was back - IE 10. My friend doesn't care whether she has 10 or 11. She's happy and I'm a genius - or so she says.

    Thanks for guiding me along.

Virginia, You friend may not care if they have IE 10 or 11, but 11 is more secure than 10 is. Have them do a complete Disk Cleanup then wait about a week then try reinstalling 11 and see what happens.
