Resolved unknown badly-broken-up background sound

    This guy says he opened an e-mail from a friend and all of a sudden he has what sounds like badly-broken-up sound in the background. I have listened to it and it sounds like TV commercials; in fact, I'm sure of that. But, is so badly broken up, I have no idea what they are saying.

    The sound comes, lasts for a few minutes, goes away for a few minutes and comes back. This process repeats itself as long as the computer is on.

    I have looked at running processes, the startup group and MSConfig and I don't see anything there that looks suspicious to me. I have no idea where else to look for this.

    Sorry for the bother. The owner says he's replacing the computer in a few weeks, at which time he'll restore the system to factory settings and give it to another in the office.

    Until then, he'll just mute it.
