Our HP ENVY Ultrabook 4-1030us laptop computer running Windows 7 just stopped, put up a popup window, and announced it was running a "flash process." By the time we saw it, it was counting down from 95 seconds. The computer made an unusual sound while this was underway, something like a fan or DVD running (it has no DVD drive). When the window went away, so did the sound. It had no flash drive installed. At the end, the popup window disappeared, and the computer seems to be okay.

We've had this computer for more than a year, and have never seen this happen before. I've done a quick search on the Internet, and haven't found anything about a "flash process."

    Any ideas?

Hi Terry. That sounds very suspicious. It could have been an intrusive pop-up that appeared. Were you browsing on the Internet when this happened? Did you install any new programs recently?

Lets see what is going on with your machine.

    1. Please download AdwCleaner and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator.

    2. When the program opens click on the Scan button.

    3. Then when the program has finished scanning, click on the Clean button. The program will reboot the computer. Attach the AdwCleaner log in your next reply.

    4. Next, download the Junkware Removal Tool and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator and attach the JRT log in your next reply.

    5. Then download the Adware Removal Tool. Right click the program and select Run as administrator. When the program opens click on the Scan and Repair button. After that process completes a new window will open with items that the program found. Make sure all the items are selected and then click on the Remove button. The computer will be rebooted.

    6. Once that is done, download HijackThis to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator and on the Main Menu click the button that says Do a system scan and save a logfile. Attach the HijackThis log in your next reply.

    7. After that, please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator.

    8. When the program opens check the following boxes:

    Flush DNS
    Reset FF proxy Settings
    Reset IE Proxy Settings
    Report IE Proxy Settings
    Report FF Proxy Settings
    List content of Hosts
    List IP configuration
    List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
    List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
    List Devices (problems only)

    9. Click the Go button and also attach the MiniToolBox log in your next reply.

    10. Finally, download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM): Malwarebytes Anti-Malware FREE to your desktop.

    • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    • At the end, be sure to uncheck Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO. Make sure Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware are checked, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
    • Post the results of the scan in your next reply.

You can attach logs by clicking on the Upload a File button when you are responding to your thread.

"That is correct, Flash or Flashing is a term used to describe updating a system's or a single device's firmware to something more current and up to date. But, as you seem to already know, does not happen by accident or automatically generally speaking and I would think that HP would know if they have some type of auto update utility on your system that would actually evoke a BIOS Flash. But any piece of hardware that includes an EPPROM can generally be written to or flashed (your CD/DVD, your NIC, your GPU, etc.,) but again these things do not usually happen automatically.
How is your system now? Are you seeing any negative side effects from the event? Has it happen before or since?
If the system, as your OP implies, is relatively new, and is exhibiting any continued weirdness, my suggestion would be to exploit your warranty and have it replaced.
    Regards
    Randy "

There is nothing obviously wrong. 10 or more minutes after the above event, there was a pop-up at the lower right of the screen, with an HP logo that said to push the ok to reboot the computer. That looked pretty legit, so we did that, and it rebooted okay.

Much as I don't have time to do this, I'll probably run the malware checks suggested in the previous post and see if anything comes up.

The computer is not new, been in service for about a year and a half, and we've never had a problem like this before.

    Results from Scans and tests

    Evan,

Here are the results of the scans you recommended. For some reason, it looks like the HiJack log would not attach. I'll try that with another message.:

Logs should be posted like you did the HJT log. I like many other will not click on something like this as you may never know if you will get infected or not.

How is everything with the computer now? I am not seeing any infections in your logs so that is good news.

Please post Malware logs & the like in the Malware removal forum, that's where they belong.

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Again, just following Evan's suggestion. I don't do this enough that I'm familiar with that protocol.

Good to know that the logs aren't showing a problem. So far not seeing anything odd. This particular computer is used intermittently, so we'll keep an eye on it.

Given that nothing was found, and after the "flash process" took place, several minutes later we did get a pop up in the lower right corner of the screen that had what appeared to be a legitmate look with an HP logo. So this whole event might have been something that the HP Envy computer did to itself as a maintenance process. But I was unable to find anything relevant on the HP website when I searched for "flash process."

So at the least, if it was a legitimate self-maintenance on the computer, HP could have done a much better job identifying what was going on.

If you do still experience any other issues like this though then feel free to post in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum as Arie has advised.
