    IBM Desktop Performance Problems

    Computer: IBM ThinkCentre A51
    OS: Windows XP Pro SP3

    1. Crashing on boot-up. BSOD points to drvmcdb.sys as non-functioning or corrupted.
    2. Computer is extremely slow, especially when searching and during boot-up (5 mins.).

I purchased RegCure Pro to deal with general system problems, but this did not help the performance. At this point, I do not know what to do next.

The performance became degraded after the graphics card was replaced a few months ago and has got a lot worse. I have been looking for things that may be connected to the degradation but have not been able to due to lack of expertise. As an outcome, I do not understand the function of drmvcdb.sys. It is located in c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers and also in c:\Program Files\IBMDLA\install\.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Remove or update your Roxio software.

I would consider doing a System Restore, althought they have not worked well for me under Windows XP in the past.

    IBM Performance

    Thanks, Matt.

I have tried that, but there was no noticeable effect. I suppose you can use earlier restore points but I don't want to get into too deep!

Boot up and get to your desktop. Now, right click on the taskbar, left click on taskmanager on the menu fly up. Hover over to CPU column heading and double click on it so the results are reading highest to lowest. Tell us which "image names" are using up the cpu..This is assuming that your system is still running at a crawl

    Hi elcajongunsfan,

I did the above and what happened was that at the top of the list was firefox.exe followed by winlogon.exe. The others were relatively tiny. Norton antivirus has been giving me messages about cpu usage but I did not what I could about it. Does this tell me anything about the problem?

Thanks for your help - I appreciate it.

    Thanks Admin,

It will take me a while to digest the procedure to be followed! Bear with me.

    I have Norton Anti-virus installed.

A program called Malwarebytes' Anti-malware was downloaded to my machine 2 or 3 months ago by my ISP (Comcast) when I had problems with e-mail. They used it on my machine to fix the e-mail, but I have never used it myself. Is this the one you recommend? Should I download it as you suggest and uninstall the version that is there now?
Question: you mention "logs" in your message, but I am not sure what to look for.
Question: what does "bump your topic" mean?

Finally, I had a BSOD when I booted up this AM. The message was the usual one I have been receiving i.e. " drvmcdb.sys has stopped working or become corrupted "

    Thanks again,

    kaythos

Open Malwarebytes - no need for a new copy - update definitions and run quick scan. Copy/paste the log (text file) produced into a new thread in the Malware and Virus removal forum. Remember to refer to this thread in your new thread.

    Run DDS
Open each file in turn and copy/paste into your thread. You will probably need to spread these logs over 2 or more posts.
I do not see any response to Arie's suggestion in post #3

Right, I was a bit puzzled by this one. I am not aware that I have Roxio software unless it is going by some other name. I looked in Control Panel but I could not see anything that looked like that. Can you suggest what I should do?

Check to see if you have IBMDLA installed - I think you have .....
This is essentially CD writing software.

Thanks, Pete. I have run Malwarebytes and DDL and have posted the first part of the mbam logfile in a new post in the Malware and Virus Removal Section. In order to send the rest of the logs, how should I proceed?. Do I have to make an entirely new post/thread for each section?

Copy/paste the content of each log into new posts in your thread in the Malware & Virus Removal forum ......

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/malware-virus-removal/106974-ibm-desktop-probs-malware.html

You will need to post each log into a separate post and, depending on the length of each log it may be necessary to spread a log over 2 or more posts.

I don't see the Mbam log, or part of it in that thread.

Sorry to have been so long. Thanks for your reply. I will re-post that first part of the MBAM log and then follow with the remaining logs from the DDS scans.
