    Hello,
I am running windows vista on a 5 year old HP pavilion. I have a laptop and iPad that I mostly use so don't get on this computer very often. On Saturday I did an extensive malware removal and a scan afterward using my AT&T McAfee. It said it removed all the issues. However, now Windows won't open. After I log in it goes to the black screen with a single window; cmd.exe. It says "C:users\CHARWE~1\Appdata\Local\Temp\vxlgatejdunnrabkx.exe" is not recognized operable program or batch file.
    C:\Windows\system32>
I read a similar issue from 6/3/13. i think the user name was "pcdbug ". He was using Windows7. How can I go about fixing this? I'd hate to lose files from this computer. Thanks!

Have you tried to get in from Safe Mode? I would try Safe Mode with Networking so that you can get on line.

Thanks for the reply. I did try that but I just get a larger version of the same thing. Same cmd.exe window.

Hi Charwerth, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Since you stated that you removed a lot of malware infections on the computer lets make sure that your computer is completely clean since it looks like you could still have remnants left behind.

Please read this and post a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum.

Once the computer has been declared clean, post back in this thread with an update on your issue.

    Evan Omo,
Do you mean re-post my original post on Malware and Virus removal?

At the end of that "C:\Windows\system32>" prompt, what happens if you simply type:
    exit
    and press [Enter]?

    Look, it's pretty simple:

Since a Google search only comes back to this site, I'm 100% sure we're dealing with a virus/infection.

And if typing 'exit' doesn't work I'm sure you could try <CTRL> <C> then 'exit' and see if that does anything different...

I typed "exit" and hit enter and the window disappeared. But nothing else.

I meant press the keyboard keys CTRL and C at the same time, then type 'exit in the cmd window.

Oh and did you try typing 'explorer.exe'? As The Good Doctor suggested?

This worked. I seem to have gotten my desktop back with all my files. Thanks so much. I haven't shut it down yet. Do you think I'll have to do this every time?
