Resolved Computer crashed!

    Hello,
    I have a AMD Eight-core 64 bit computer with 16g of Ram and 500 g hard drive. I am using Windows 7 professional 64 bit. I think the computer might be about 1.5 years old.

    I was watching a video and the computer gave me the dreaded blue screen. After the blue screen, the computer tried to boot up but with no success. I just get the a blank screen with the cursor on it.

    This has been a excellent computer. I would get some blue screen randomly but then it would restart back. So, I do not know if I have some hardware going bad or what?


    I can provide more info about the computer, but for now I am not at home. When I do get home, I can provide more details about the computer.

    Try this:

    Turn it all the way off, wait 15 to 20 seconds, turn it back on, then start tapping the [F8] key. When the Advanced Boot Options menu comes up, use the arrow keys to select Repair Your Computer, and press [Enter]. Click a keyboard layout in the list, click Next, click a user name in the list, type in the password (if any), and then click OK. In the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. When the repair process is complete, click Finish, cross your fingers and reboot.​

    Hi David. Adding to what SpywareDr said above, if the computer blue screens again it would help if you told us what the error message was. If you press F8 on startup and select disable restart on system failure, if the computer blue screens again the computer will stay on the blue screen instead of trying to reboot itself. This way you will be able to tell us what blue screen you got.

    Thank you very much. It is now working after I did the restart and repair feature. Now, if I can figure out why I am getting the blue screen randomly. I am guessing a hardware error. I will now set my computer from restarting to see the code. Hopefully, I can figure that out with help from windowsbbs guys.

    I got the blue screen again. Here is what was on the blue screen.
    afd.sys

    Open up the command prompt and type in netsh winsock reset

    Press enter. Reboot/restart your computer.

    It could also be a Virus disguising itself as afd.sys
    It could also be a bad driver for your network card.

    The requested operation requires elevation.

    I thought I am the administrator!

    Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. Now type in the netsh winsock reset command and press enter. Then reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.

    I just got the blue screen again today. I did notice that this one had a different code. All I got this time was ccSetx64.sys. I did not write down the number codes but will definitely get them next time.

    The file ccSetx64.sys is part of Symantec Security Technologies. Do you have any Norton products installed? The description of the ccSetx64.sys file is Common Client Settings Driver.

    So it appears that this driver file may be causing your computer to crash.

    Yes, I do have Norton Internet Securities installed.

    I would suggest that you uninstall Norton Internet Security from your system and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials.

    To remove Norton Internet Security, click Start< Control Panel< Uninstall a program and remove all Symantec and Norton programs from your computer. Then once Norton has been removed and you reboot the computer, download and run the Norton Removal Tool to finish removing any remnants of Norton that are still present on your machine.

    If you got a current version of Norton, you may want to think why it is crashing. Could your computer be infected?

    Your BSOD should be located in the C:\window\minidump
