2 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 8 GB of system memory
    * Due to Windows 32-bit operating system limitation, when more than 4 GB of physical memory is installed, the actual memory size displayed will be less than 4 GB.
    Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 1333 (O.C.)/1066/800 MHz memory modules

(Please refer "Memory Support List" for more information.)

Did you try the new stick by itself?

What are the specs of the new and the older sticks?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Did you refer to the motherboard manual before purchasing the RAM ?

According to the manual the motherboard only supports 4 GB RAM - remove the 2 GB module and see if that resolves the issue.

Interesting - S2 manual states 4 GB RAM, but spec states 8 GB - go figure!

As I posted there is an inconsistency between the manual and the spec sheet. Screen shot from manual - which I looked at first .....

You are right Pete... it's a bit messy on their site.

So I decided to check out the specs for the Intel® G41 Express Chipset:

So here you go. DDR3 only 4 GB. Time for a new board IMNSHO :)

I'm wondering why you didn't purchase the Gigabyte "Approved" RAM on their list?
Having 2 different brands of RAM can cause heaps of problems. Neil.

I suspect the different RAM specs might be due to motherboard revisions. The manual was likely written and printed before the first motherboard came off the production line as Rev. 1.0, and perhaps that only supported 4Gb total - while later revisions supported 8Gb. Just a guess but I have seen that happen many times before - especially as 64-bit support was added to boards.

As far as buying approved RAM I agree 100%. We need to review the QVLs (qualified vendors lists) for RAM and CPUs (especially CPUs). However, there are way too many RAM makers and models for motherboard makers to test all. This is why at the beginning of the Gigabyte G41MT-S2 RAM QVL, it says,
So you don't have to buy listed RAM, but MUST buy RAM with same specs as listed RAM.

Also note that motherboard memory managers in recent (within the last 5) years have become much better at managing slightly dissimilar RAM. At the same time, RAM makers have become much better at producing "quality" RAM with much tighter tolerances to the published specs. This is why today's RAM sold in pairs and trips are no longer individually tested and matched before packaging, as they were years ago for dual and triple channel applications. They are simply bundled to save packaging, storage, and transportation costs, and convenience.

This means in theory, installing RAM from the same maker is no longer necessary as long as they have the same specifications. And in practice this is proving to be true - to a point. It is still HIGHLY RECOMMENDED when installing RAM in channels (dual or triple) each channel be populated with matched (same specs and brand) RAM sticks. That said, I currently have Corsair and Mushkin RAM paired and running in dual-channel on my backup server with no problems.

So again, it is essential to buy a CPU from the QVL because there is only 1 CPU brand per board model, and a very limited number of CPU models each board supports. But for RAM, you only need buy RAM with identical specs as listed RAM. Of course, if you want to be sure, buy listed RAM and populate your board with all identical sticks.

I note most RAM makers have some sort of automatic or manual "wizard" to scan your board and determine, and guarantee compatible RAM.

Finally, I note there have been several BIOS revisions released since the board first came out. Often, BIOS updates add new support features. You need to verify the revision number of your board (it will be printed on the board somewhere) then look for BIOS updates for that board to see if any of them added greater than 4Gb RAM support.
