I dropped an 1/8th of a cup of water on the forward portion / keyboard of my laptop tonight.

I immediately shut it down. Track pad was working. Computer shut down.

I pulled out the batter and inverted the computer as small drops of water came out of forward right corner. I tried to turn it on, but no go.

I mistakenly forgot to pull the power cord and left it on my desk.

About 25 minutes later, I noticed a noxous odor and it was coming from the computer and realized that the power was still running to the computer when I immediately pulled it.

I put the computer inverted in a plastic bag full of rice and in a plastic bag near the heater and prayed.

Any clue about the noxous odor? Did I fry the mother board? Do you suppose I will be able to recover into on the hard drive if I buy a new machine.?

NOT SO SMART not to mention clumsey

Hi notsosmart, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

No idea but it could be the motherboard fried or some other component.

    Possibly, but we don't know.

Most likely you will be able to. If you take out the harddrive from the laptop and hook it up as an external harddrive to another computer then chances are it should work fine.

Leave the laptop drying overnight and in the morning go ahead and leave the battery unplugged and just connect the power adapter to the laptop and see if it will turn on.

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

another question for xps laptop by the way.
The power supply has a blue light around the insertion ring.
I did try to plug it in this morning, and got nothing, but noticed that the blue light went out when I plugged it into the machine. When I pulled it out, and unplugged and re plugged it from the outlet the blue light goes back on. Thoughts.

How long reasonably do you suppose I should give this. I am kind of on the verge of ordering a new machine.

    thanks.

I would give it at least 48 hours. I would also be looking for a new machine. I hate to say this, but I think yours is probably toast. But wait and see. I would also pull the HD out immediately and make sure it is dry especially the pins on the HD where the HD plugs into the MOBO. It doesn't take long for electrolysis to set in and start making the connectors turn green.

do you know the best way to get a tutorial on how to do this, i.e., pull the HD out. Unlike my other laptops, this one seems difficult to dis assemble.

Well as you know they are all kind of different. Since we don't know what kind of laptop it is, it is hard to show you a tutorial on it. Google your laptop make and model and see what you find.
