recently my computer just froze, and when i restarted it, when it gets to desktop it will randomly start to do a split seconf stutter. the audio video and mouse will all freeze for half a second. I have tried to change flash and java. It happens anytime. I have taken out my graphics card and put it back to see if it was a connection error. i have done numerous scans with different programs and nothing seems to be wrong. i have done registry checks. My current anti virus is AVG, but i have used that forever. It just suddenly started this after crashing one day. I have found that if i reinstall windows and clear the disk drive that it fixes the problem for a few weeks. Nothing seems to cause it. It is entirely random. PLZ HELP!

Hi wyethabel, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

I would first make sure that there aren't any programs that are interfering with your system causing it to freeze constantly. Follow the instructions here to perform a clean boot in Windows 7. How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.

I would run check disk on the harddrive to make sure that there aren't any corrupted sectors on the drive. Click Start< Computer. Right click on the harddrive and click properties. The harddrive properties window will open. Click the Tools tab and under Error-checking click on the Check Now button. The Check Disk window will open. Select both Automatically fix file system errors checkbox and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors checkbox. Then click the Start button. Windows will ask you to schedule the disk check on the next system reboot. Go ahead and click Yes to do so. Now reboot the computer and allow check disk to run.

If running check disk still does not stop the system from freezing then I would update all your hardware drivers to their latest versions and make sure that all the latest Windows Updates have been installed.

Recommend following Arie's instructions. You may have some type of rootkit that has altered your Operating System in order to hide itself from you and most anti-malware and anti-virus tools.

If you are still having the same issue after being given a clean bill of health from one of our malware experts, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve the problem.

Sorry, but you have 2 posts on our forum, nothing in the Malware forum, so unless you can point us to another forum where you had experts look at your malware logs....

I have looked at my computer logs, and the problems seems to happen right as i get a log that states "The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO failure on volume C:." every time my problem happens, this is the only log at the same time.

I'd run the hard drive manufacturer's hard drive diagnostics. If you see errors there, the hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

To run the diags, download and burn the Ultimate Boot CD to CD. It has all the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utilities, (plus much more). Simply boot your computer from this CD and select the utility you want to run.

If you aren't sure who made the hard drive in your computer, use Seagate's Seatools as it will work with most any make of drive.

The following instructions may prove helpful for burning the UBCD .iso file to disc: How can I write (burn) ISO files to CD or DVD?

I have determined that that log has alomst nothing to do with the desktop stutterings, it must be a program or process, i do a full comp check of running processes and nothing is there, the cpu is 100-99% idle, but the desktop still lags, so im guessing its a program. when i reinstall windows and completely clear the disk it always comes back after a few weeks so im guessing that it is something caused by windows 7. i ran the seatools scans and my drives passed btw. plz continue the suggestions! thx for the help so far.

Why do you think your "desktop stutterings" are being "caused by Windows 7 "? (None of my Windows 7 setups 'stutter').

If it runs fine for "a few weeks" after a fresh install and then "comes back ", have you tried to do a System Restore back to before the problem occurred?

If you have reinstalled Windows 7 but the problem remains, the problem is unlikely to be a Windows fault.

It really can't be a Windows error, because reinstalling Windows 7 deletes the previous Windows installation. Likewise, it can't be a virus, because a virus which infects a system file, i.e. a Windows file, will be deleted along with all the system files when Windows is re-installed.

Freezing might be caused by a too aggressive anti-virus program, if you have one which runs on startup. Switch off the anti-virus program's option to run automatically on startup, and just use it to scan any files you download.

Freezing might be caused by Windows trying to auto-update itself in the background. Switch off Windows update in C:\Windows\System32\services.msc

Intermittent freezing of the computer is suggestive of a possible RAM memory chip fault, or some other hardware failure. A RAM module can be tested for faults, using software available for free online - the RAM module manufacturer's website is your best starting place for locating that software.

Freezing might indicate a CPU fault. Again, try the manufacturer's website to see if they offer any diagnostic software for testing their CPU chips.

Hardware faults most commonly occur in the RAM memory modules, the processor chip (CPU), or the Power Supply Unit (PSU).

You will find the program System Information Windows [siw.exe] very useful for identifying the hardware in your computer. See http://www.gtopala.com

Yes, if the problem came back right after the install. But as OP noted:

That could well be caused by installing/loading compromised files or backups...

I am not loading any backups and so far, I'm just downloading anything required, such as windows updates, but it happens even before those.

I see traces of a fraudulent security program, possibly more. Also seems like you have a failing hard drive:
