My Dell Vostro laptop with 8GB of Ram became very slow and last night booted into a Vostro screen. This morning it booted into a Win7 screen with hardly any Icons on the desktop. I have taken it to the repairshop, whose first comment is that my machine is puddled because I have added Advanced System Care 6,Microsoft Security Essentials,CC Cleaner, and Spyware Blaster. This old HP,running XP has all the above added and gives no trouble.Do you agree with the Computer Tech man or would it be idiotic of me to follow my gut and pay up,then download the above, again. I do all my downloads via C.Net.I think I'm throwing money away, but the Dell was really sick. I do like the little add -ons.What do you think.I'm 69 and know only a bit about this tech stuff.

Hi dajman. Those programs that you installed should not have slowed down the computer to a crawl. Did you run a registry cleaner by any chance? Did you make any change to the system before the slow down happened?

I would try performing a clean boot in Windows 7 and see if that makes any difference. Take a look here, How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Evan, you know what the next question is --" What's a Clean Boot" ?
The story started with setting up a new router and connecting devices run on the Wi-Fi.
I did a lot of net trawling trying to discover how to upgrade Android ICS to Jelly Bean ( I do suffer from OCD)
I spent R680(ZAR) (about 80 USD) and the Tecchie took off all my freebie tools and left me with Norton. Bottom line it works now. I expected an 8Gig Ram machine with a 2.4ghz Intel i3 core processor and 265GB out of 320GB free,to enable me to donate my old 2GiG HP,running XP and all the "Free Tools "- b ut it doesn't. Many thanks for your interest Evan. I'll give it a try later and let you know, thro these pages, Dave.

A clean boot just loads the Windows services and does not load any 3rd party programs at startup when you boot up the machine. This process helps to determine if the problem of the slow computer is caused by a program that was installed on the machine.

    Ok, keep me posted.

    Dell Vostro Slow

Evan, thanks for your help.I did a clean boot and things seemed OK. The Tech Shop did install Norton and it's arrival opened a can of worms by messing up my Wi-Fi and having a fight with Security Essentials,Malware, and Prevex that my bank insisted I use.
After much deleting (starting with Norton) and re-setting up my Internet and Wi-Fi, I think I can say that,so far, things are fine.
Thanks for the help.I've put Norton back,Advanced System Care and CC Cleaner. Norton did not like Prevex and Spyware Blaster,so off they went.So far so good. Many thanks.
