    Hello,

    Running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit with SP1.

Recently installed PowerColor AP5450 (Radeon HD5450) graphical card (a PCI card) on the system due to the built-in video card on the motherboard died.

Installed the software driver from their homepage but the graphics is rendered very poorly. For instance, minimizing a windows is not instant, you gradually see the window being removed within maybe a second.

Device Manager informs me that the only Display Adapters installed is called "Intel(R) G33\G31 Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.0 ". This device does not match the graphical card installed, I have a feeling this matches the video card on the motherboard. Tried to delete the device restart computer but then Windows reinstalled the same device.

Did some more random digging; Control Panel > Display > Screen Resolution > Advanced settings, The adapter tab contains "Unavailable" or "n/a" on all information. Clicking on Properties button (Adapter type), opens a window called "VgaSave Properties" which informs me that "This device is working properly ". Not sure what vgasave is.

Tried running gpuz which informs me that name of card is "Intel(R) G33\G31 Express Chipset Family.. ", GPU is G31/G33, basically the same info that device manager gave.

Here is link to vendor page on graphical card: http://powercolor.com/global/products_features.asp?id=326

I have contacted the PowerColor but not heard back from them. Therefore I wanted to check if anyone here had any good suggestions?

    Appreciate any help.

Hi laasunde. It looks like you are using the generic video driver for your AMD Radeon HD 5450.

Click Start< Control Panel< Uninstall a Program and uninstall any Intel video drivers that are present in the list.

Then download and install the latest AMD video driver from here, AMD Catalyst™ Display Driver for Windows Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8 32-bit.

Reboot the computer after installing the latest AMD driver and let me know if there is any change in the system performance.

    Thank you for the reply.

Just to clarify, I am using the card PowerColor Go! Green HD5450 512MB DDR2 PCI and not ATI Radeon™ HD 5450 Graphics. Took me a while to understand there was two different cards. Both seem to be based on same core technology.

Control panel > Programs and Features contains 'AMD Catalyst Install Manager ' but no Intel programs. Uninstalled the AMD application and re-installed new driver package. Unfortunately it did not improve anything. Still the generic driver that is being used.

The weird thing is that I do not see any Catalyst\AMD\ATI application in Start > All Programs or in control panel.

    Ideas?

It looks like the AMD drivers aren't recognizing your video card. What motherboard do you have?

Is this a newer PC that you installed the video card into or is the computer many years old?

Since you installed the video card in a PCI slot, if possible try another PCI slot on the motherboard and make sure there is no dust or dirt that could interfere with the connection to the motherboard.

This is a Fujisu Simens SCALEO PI 2662 computer which is six years old.

Reading on the mother board it says G31T-M2 V.1.0, not sure if this is name or not.

    Using SIW:

North Bridge Intel P35/G33/G31 Revision A2

    South Bridge Intel 82801GB (ICH7/R) Revision A1

    CPU Name Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

    Installed Memory 4096 MBytes

Tried placing the video card in another PCI slot but that did not have any effect.

This article suggests that there is an option in the BIOS ....
The data sheet for your computer shows that it has both PCI & PCIe slots - which are you using?

The only remotely relevant BIOS setting I found was "Init Display First" which was set to PCI. Other option was PCI express. There was no option to disable built-in video card.

    Using PCI.

I still think there should be an option in BIOS to switch off the onboard video, consult your manual.

From what I see here, Windows is still detecting the onboard video.

OK, I checked your manual. You should be able to set VGA Share Memory to disabled, hopefully that disables the onboard chip.

Also note that the motherboard manufacturer lists a number of PCI-E cards it tested and qualified for use (under the FAQ menu item).

First of all, thank you for your excellent advice so far :)

The manual your referred to is for motherboard G31T-M while the motherboard installed on my computer is G31T-M2. The BIOS advance chipset setup on my computer does not contain VGA Share Memory entry like shown in that manual.

Tried searching for the correct manual but have not been able to find it yet.

OK, well, maybe just replace the MB then ;)

I've seen refurbished ones listed from $35-$75.

Why in the first place did you purchase an PCI video card instead of an PCIe model

ok now for the onboard video setting in the BIOS

    Onboard VGA = PCI
Discrete VGA (ie: add in card)= PCIe

that's where some of your problem is coming from and unfortunately the only way to correct the problem is to buy an PCIe graphics card and set PCIe as the Init Display First...

Also there is the little fact that AMD/ATI never designed any of the HDxxxx family of GPU's to be run on the PCI bus nor the AGP bus for that matter but that didn't stop third party manufacturers from jimmying these chips onto those cards though so really it's upto them to support them with drivers

AMD/ATI Catalyst drivers do not support these GPU's on the PCI bus and vary rarely do they put out an hotfix driver for AGP bus based HDxxxx cards that actually works properly without getting continuous ATIUMDAG.dll crashes

    Apologize for later reply.

    Your reply is interesting.

I am considering whether to update just video card or just maybe the motherboard and cpu deserves an update aswell.
