I have Vista and am using it comfortably. But I wonder if I should upgrade -- isn't there some way to test-drive win 7 before I actually buy it?

    Welcome to the board! :)

Millions of people have used Windows 7 and most of them are pleased with the improvements in flexibility and stability over previous versions. As far as I know there's no trial version, but do you have access to a friend's computer that's running Win7? Or to a store with display computers with Win7 running?

To find out how well your system is suited to Win7, you could Google "Windows 7 requirements" and view what's there.

Are you thinking of 32-bit or 64-bit? What CPU do you have? How much RAM? How do you use your computer -- general Web surfing? e-mailing, gaming? business management? image processing? Give us some more informaton about what you have and how you intend to use it so we can advise you with more precision.

Hi VisKat, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

I would definitely recommend upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista. Adding to what BOBBO said, it is an improvement over Windows Vista plus it runs faster than Vista runs on the same hardware.

If your system can run Windows Vista well then you won't have any problems running Windows 7. To make sure that your software and hardware devices work with Windows 7 you should download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to be safe.

Are you planning on doing a clean install or an in place upgrade of Windows 7?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Hi I can only comment on my own experiences with Vista as woeful!

It would update and then run slow or error messages would appear saying something wasn't working properly and would only work properly again on the next update.

My Niece was also using the same PC for her college work and one fateful day it updated and Norton did it's scan as usual and deleted the update and caused a boot failure!

IMO Vista is in part the reason XP is so popular, XP is far quicker than Vista or 7 on older PC's, W7 is great I use it myself and as long as your machine is fairly new it should work fine.

If you do use it you may want to turn off the aero and animations I have because my graphics cards are old.

And like Bobbo and Evan say, W7 is a vast improvement on Vista!

    Regards Ian.

An upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 is alright but can be slightly unstable. Having a HP Presario CQ5115uk computer complete with Vista preinstalled and later special Windows 7 update was a reasonable task. Later an error required computer to be reinstalled to factory settings, this envolved Vista and Windows 7 to again being reinstalled, this time an error came up as Windows 7backup no longer would complete, leaving no protection or being able to restore computer to an earlier date. Apparently there is no solution to this error, Microsoft todate has not come up with software update to rectify this error.

As you can see many if not all is suggesting to upgrade to windows 7. I also suggest it. But since you want to test it first before complete transfer. I suggest doing it on virtual machine, virtualbox is my favorite.
    good luck
